Factors That Affect Weapon Proficiency Growth
Does the difficulty mode or a recent patch affect the rate at which weapon proficiencies increase? On my first normal playthrough I managed to max everything but Sword and Gun+Sword in around fifty hours give or take. Wanting to start completely fresh, I nuked my saves and started over. I sped through the game on Easy to unlock Extreme Difficulty, netting me around 140 Sword proficiency in 5-7 hours. I've since spent around 8-10 hours grinding Remnant Wasteland on Extreme to level up, and I've only gained about 200 weapon proficiency in Pistol/AR combined.

Does anyone know specifically what makes it increase? Is it damage, number of shots fired, does affinity affect it, does difficulty affect it, etc. It just feels off considering how effortless it was to max them on my first playthrough.

I know that weapon proficiency for the characters has now a maximum of 5000 instead of 1000, but I don't think that there was any change for the players' weapon proficiency.

I just found out that using sword skills will not increase sword proficiency.
I also think to have read somewhere that the full automatic sniper helps to increase sniper proficiency.

So I believe that just using the weapons would increase proficiency, but I do not know the details.

before I've maxed all the weapon proficiency recently (for achievements sake), i was basically sitting on only AR, SMG, and Sniper at maxed/1000.

to max the rest of the weapons i've grinded the Executioner boss in Icicle Dungeon and other NMs (rotating between bosses at times so i wont get bored).

from what I've seen the number of shots that hit the target seem to play a big part in proficiency gain. this is why, not counting the ones I've already maxed, Gatling guns were the next easiest to level up for me while rocket launchers took the longest.

damage done and the level of the enemy may also play a factor in proficiency gain.

then again this is all based on pure observation, i didn't do any data gathering so it might vary for you :)

Someone posted a japanese page and I looked through it (with translate in chrome)... This is the tips/trick page and relevant info is at the end above the comments.

- Recommended to use a weapon with high rate of fire.
- Critical hits and weakpoints increase proficiency faster.
- Recommended to use a high-crit rate weapon if using a sword.
- Recommends grinding that eyeball boss because it's essentially a giant weakpoint.

It sounds like I'm just imagining things perhaps, thank you for your comments. I guess on the bright side this means I probably won't finish maxing out my weapons long before I finish my skills like what happened on my first playthrough, but it does feel like it will take an unseemly amount of time his time through.

Damage dealt with a weapon

basically its a big ol' gauge showing how much damage you've dealt with that weapon thus far
