They are allready working/finishing on the next SAO game: Sword Art Online: Alicization Lycoris.
Just like Sword Art Online Alternative Gun Gale Online was a one season spinoff of SAO proper, Fatal Bullet was more likely then not a one-off spinoff game of this franchise.
SAO franchise follow the current adaptation so anything related is just an offer. The only game that has potential for new release would be Freedom War 2 since it’s more psvita and switch exclusive. They may need to change the graphic and design to work for other platforms.
That’s all they can do to make something like this game at least. Though FW is better than FB
1.Original story from ranobe is almost fully adopted into anime and games. Kawahara released one (and will release the second one in December) volume of Unitial Ring, so there is just not enough material for new anime/game. Alicization Lycoris will be released in 2020 when airing of War of Underworld will end. And AL will feature ALL of Alicization story, so there won't be Alicization Lycoris Part 2 or something. And now there is a very reasonable question - what game they should do next? Cause they really should - SAO series are very popular all over the world, you can even say it at the peak of fame right now (end of Alicization anime adaptation, 10th anniversary, etc.).
But they just can't do anything with Unitial Ring.
Something about Aincrad again, like it was in Hollow Realization? Or maybe Progressive-game First one is possible, second one is almost not.
Something about ALO again? More possible, cause Aincrad was already used recently in HR.
New crossover or straight sequel of Accel World of Sword Art Online? Well, it's possible, but much lesser than previous variants.
Ordinal Scale game? Or maybe even AR-version? Yeah, sure....
Normal MMORPG, or even something for current-gen VR (not some experiments like it was in The Beggining and Replication Project)? Damn, I want to see it! But there is only like 1% of possibility for it.
Completly new game in SAO universe? It could be nice with appropriate realization, but it's just too risky, so probably no.
2. Very good sellings (compared to previous games) of Fatal Bullet, especially in Steam, and pretty good reviews.
3. Shooters are just popular. Much more popular than JRPGs, especially outside of Japan.
So, just to take some time between releases of Aliciztion Lycoris and next Unitial Ring game or something else, they could just develop Fatal Bullet 2 and be sure that sales with very high possibilities will be good enough.
I agree with a lot of these points, plus I personally wouldn't mind a sequel to this. The story kinda leaves a little bit of a lurch with...well I won't spoil things, but things are not nice and wrapped up as they could be. As far as the unique characters of this game goes, I like them quite a bit, plus the kirito being secondary instead of main character is fantastic. (I won't mind when he is even more in the backseat, I really like the customization and such in this game). As far as game play goes, this is probably my favorite in the franchise thus far, although just barely beating out hollow fragment, but that has more to do with the story not being finished and I do actually prefer melee combat in general, so thats why its close, but this game is *STILL* better even though I typically dislike shooters. This is a really solid game if it wasn't SAO related, just the mechanics and such are really fun. I like how they handled the affection aspect in this game too, where you use the characters, not just spam talking to them over and over (although you can do that here too, but it's still nice you can go out and play with them)
TL;DR: I have no idea if they will ever continue on fatal bullet, but they really should, its a great game in my opinion. There is haters for sure, but...they are like whatever at this point. There is always those few that have to make other' miserable cus they can't stand others being happy with something they don't like.
Anyway, because these games are just demand atm so unless there are more movies beside series, they can’t do anything without Reki written (that would be no longer SAO for that reason)
Firstly, there is no guarantee that the next developer after Aquria will be Artdink. Yes, Aquira and Artdink were alternating with each other like for 4 games. But then Bandai Namco suddenly hired Dimps. And what prevents them from hiring Dimps again or even finding entirely new developers for it's new game?
Secondly, I read once in some interivew with some SAO-gameverse producer, and he said something like: "Ordinal Scale has very interesting setting, but we are not sure if it will fit good in a game". Plus in all 5 games (almost 6) they are purposefully ignoring real world and all what we can see is just a couple of CGIs (like when Rain perfomed in Akihabara in Lost Song) or just in the context of the dialogues. And Ordinal Scale is ALL ABOUT real world. Yep, it's transformed via AR, so real world is not looking so real, but still. They will need to create a lot of real places in Tokyo which will transform after "Ordinal Scale, kidou!" and I doubt they will do it due to multiple reasons.
You won’t know what Artdink do since they never announce anything until the day they actual release . Both Lost song and SAOvsAW have only with in two months back to know that they actually release those. If you check these companies profile, you will see similarities.
Real world games actually easier to make. Like you already said about Unitial Rings, there are a lot links about how to build up the game. Lately, the author pretty much focus on real world events beside virtual only. There are a lot of inspiration from other novels, manga, and anime.
Basically, if Dimps doesn’t want to pick up the project, they won’t change the protagonist to other character than Kirito since ppl has already said about this as it is following the SAO series. Adaption will likely need a huge revision for the game itself. The story games might limited to how the story work and with this in mind. I don’t think they have enough materials to do if they don’t write an alternative version to explain contents.
Its pretty funny when I first said this to a friend of mine that they will make SAOvsAW because it’s a spin off which contain AW characters since that story not having enough materials to build up for dlcs and stuff from AW (characters might a bit too OP or weirdly if they implemented to a game which follow the SAO franchise)
