New to the series, should I watch the anime first?
Should I watch the anime before getting into the game series? Is there spoilers in the anime, or does the story in the games take off after the anime? Are there spoilers in the anime that will reveal certain parts to the games? Where should I start?

Game is seperate, completely different story. But the anime would help you understand SOME of the characters. And other things. But the game does change some plot points from the anime.

Without watching anything, u'll still have decent amount of description to understand the whole series. Even if u choose to watch the anime, the series is not an indentical copy of the anime, it contains original story, and it'll also introduce some of the stories in twisted way that are identical to the anime. So u may be aware of the incidents but not about the whole story of the series.

Games are alternative Universes, so they barely have something with the original series' plot lines.
Games also bring a lot of original characters, who has never appeared in canon.

I do not think that watching anime for the sake of gaming is needed.

You don't NEED to know anything to play the game but if you're interested in SAO then I would say read the novels, or at least the first 2. The Aincrad part of the Anime screwed with Asuna's character (It adapted OG & Progressive) and handled the side stories horribly. The Fairy Dance part skipped a part of the story (It added it to the 2nd Season) & as a side effect it made a certain character development feel forced, plus made the ending a mcguffin

You don't need the anime, but it helps.

I'd also reccomend completing skipping the 2012 series and starting with SAO II and the Phantom Bullet arc.
I don't

Do yourself a favour and ignore the anime. It's an awful mix of nonsensical stories and shameful sexism, with the audacity to pretend being deep and serious. And you will learn nothing relevant about this game from it.

Sure ... don't offer any reasons you think that or anything

You're describing basically every anime made in the past 5 years.

Thanks for the information guys. Just one more question, and putting the Anime and novels aside. I bought Sword Art Online: Hollow Realization the other day, and now I bought Fatal Bullet today. Is it safe to play both at the same time? Will Fatal Bullet reveal spoilers?

Yes, Fatal Bullet reveals minor spoilers.
Ex - There's an AI character you meet early on in Fatal Bullet that has a full fledged story in HR to check out.
I played HR first followed by FB, but it's up to you.

Thanks, I wanted to switch between the two every now and then to keep the experience fresh, but only if there weren't any big spoilers.

As someone who only really knows about the story of Sword Art Online from his friends talking about it, I never felt lost in this game. They do a good job of explaining everything so that you don't need proior knowledge.

I could recap pretty much every independant review of SAO ever done, but what's the point if people could just read or watch those?

That's really no point in saying definitively that the Anime sucks. Sword Art Online was the cool thing to hate in 2012 so I take most people who hate on it with a LARGE pinch of salt.

I've seen countless people place SAO as the "Worst Anime ever" .... I mean, COME ON!
