- at that level you don't have the HP and defense to withstand much damage
- good accessories would be great for melee, that is something hard to get at a low level
- some enemies and bosses actually cannot be killed with melee. I am not joking.
That being said, STR, AGI and VIT would probably be the main stats here. Anything that boosts HP and defense. I say defense because swords in general do good damage, if you can hit something lol.
Sorry that I'm not helping much, but this game wasn't well designed in terms of melee combat.
I have three sword builds but only for endgame. The stat that you need to focus for sword is STR/DEX/LCK. Crit is what make the sword better than a gun but most bosses are designed to anti sword. Like you might already know that GGO is a PvP game in description so it’s useful to kill humanoid NPC and small mech.
Focus your stat on DEX and LCK more than STR cause you gonna need DPS for other weapons.
And Don’t forget that sword is best if you have some allies with nano boost and Crit boost. There is a medal gauge which crucial for survival as a new player. You need to build the medal gauge up to get stat boost 20% so you can do more dmg and tankier. Give your ArFAsys or NPCs medal gauge chip if you find one while leveling their affinity for gifts
From there, you can consider either more Str for slightly more damage or Int to get some supportive skills, such as AED Shot, a buff (Crit and Nano come to mind if no one else has it) or even going so deep into Int that you get Viral Shot / Def Down. Having THAT much Int though would probably hinder your DPS...
What you need is focus on VIT and AGI, then, to improve your dps with swords, you will need to focus on a crit build (high crit sword + high LUC stat).
That mean you wont be a good dps with swords before late game (and before you get yourself a perfect Kagemitsu type-Z).
I'd recommand to finish kirito mode first, to get access to sword+handgun along with all kirito sword skills (mainly sword barrier and hyper-awarness, but dual orbital will be quite nice to have too when fighting bosses like the behemoth).
Another thing, learn and upgrade tactical roll... once at rank 4 it will be your best spam/filler skill with swords, because at rank 4 it deal melee damage.
Here's the build I'm using: https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=X8RMemmphL8
I dont recommand going sword+handgun and sword though, redundant and pointless, just pick one and couple it with a good AR, to have a good and versatil ranged attack and weapon art, or a pair of dual handguns to abuse the weapon art and be able to spam hyper-awarness along with all the long CD sword skills, which will make you invincible while also improving your DPS quite a bit for as long as you can keep the weapon art up.
Dont couple it with too heavy weapons, it will cripple your mobility and mobility is one of the most important thing for melee attackers, neither with a shotgun or SMG, swords already have a close range weapon art, this makes shotguns and SMGs weapon arts redundants while limiting your options to attack at range.
