yea, I think so.

The game is made according to the name of the anime, so that is why it has "online" word in it. It is not an mmo.

game would not start for me, a pop up said it could not connect to server, so not sure how people are playing offline

Did you try putting Steam into Offline mode?

You can play all SAO games offline. The "Online" in the name is there because I think there is a show or manga called Sword Art Online.
