How does romance work?

Is it exclusive when playing as mr. plot-armor ♥♥♥♥♥♥♥? Can you romance anyone as your custom avatar? Does it matter if my character is a girl? ''Or is the game just gonna be like ''Oh, you wanna romance the sao characters like in previous games? get rekt, play as kirito because we dont want our characters to be potentially gay. lol''

And to get to the point where you can take anyone out on dates, you have to have them in your party and do stuff like revive them when they're down. I don't know if just healing them works, or if completing subquests with them works, because nobody really has a definitive guide on this game.

You raise her affinty and get little events where you basically go on little dates where you just talk similar to what happens when you raise your affinity with Agil, Bazalt Joe, Klein but at least with Agil and Klein you unlock some artwork, just not pillow talk artwork like with the other characters.

Also if you have already gotten one of the bad ends it's highly recommended that you buy the Nostalgic Echo from Argo so you can speed up Affinity Rank with all the characters you need. You'll know who to raise by looking at the Steam achievements.

It's a damn good thing there aren't lewds of Bazalt Joe and Klein. No one wants to see that.
(I wouldn't mind some Agil lewds though.)

Too bad Agil is married. Anime doesn't get enough big, muscled guys for fanservice purposes.

Too bad they made him white in the game then. Maybe not white compared to other characters, but hes certainly no chocolate anymore.

Not playing as Kirito you can do the pillow talk with Kureha, Itsuki, and Zeliska. The others you can get the rest out of the way quickly in Kirito mode just by raising their affinity and then hoping into his mode for the pillow talk and pictures and you don't have to actually do anything else in the mode.
