Ultimately you have to realize after a couple years, you better buy a licensed game if you want it since this keeps happening more often than not.

I suspect it's mostly this. A board game app isn't worth much these days without built-in online play, and handing it over to BGA instead of re-doing an app means that all they have to do is sit back and collect royalties while BGA provides all the support.
