They broke it somehow

I had a problem with the game not starting, even though it worked fine earlier this month.

So I tried the usual, running as admin, and changing compatibility settings, nothing worked.
So I verified the game files. Steam reported 2 files were not verified and so were reacquired. And now the game throws up a message saying 'steam not found', which I'm told should be fixed by updating the steam client, but the steam client is up to date.

What did you do to my game, valve, you bunch of cowboys?

And now it works again. Just one of those 'steam being weird' things I guess.
