The problem is just custom songs rights, others mods arent concerned, it could be a solution to open a Steam Workshop for all others mods. By the way all customs songs you downloaded stay in your files updates after updates.. so if BetterSongs is broken it wont be that dramatic and a source of stress for some player at every update x)
There is a plenty of solutions, but Meta dont want to make BS community a part of their equation. But honnestely for Meta it could be a win-win deal, cause I personnaly bought BS thanks to the BS community.
just my 2 cents:
catering to the hardcore Beat Saber community would probably lose Meta money. Steam is likely their smallest install base and the least likely to spend additional money on DLC.
anyone posting in this discussion thread is in a very small minority (mod users) of a minority (Steam users). a massive percentage of BS's install base runs the Quest or PSVR version. these casual players are way more likely to be buying the official song packs. the Nintendo Wii had massive sales because they targeted a casual user base.
additionally, Meta bundled BS for free with the Quest 2 for a long time because revenue from one game (even a very popular one) is small scale in relation to their overall goal. they used it as a killer app vehicle to get people onto the Meta platform because they make way more money in the long run by getting users onto their storefront. similar to Valve losing money on each Steam Deck sale because they make money in the long run by having more people on Steam.
it also complicates things from a software development standpoint.
a mod compatibility layer through Steam Workshop would require them to implement features that would only apply to the Windows target of Beat Saber. features that uniquely apply to a particular build target complicate the code base and/or build process.
Whats most annoying is that our mods break and the reason they break is because they're adding yet another song pack that is far off from what you listen to and would love to see here and actually spend money on.
Would love some infected mushroom or something like that but guess we'll have yet another rapper so I'll have to spend time fixing my mods. AGAIN.
As much as I love Stronger I can't just be playing that til I either die of old age or they finally add more good EDM music
