Also I'd recommend using this
https://github.com/Kylemc1413/SongCore
It's available in Modassistant too.
Yeah I've copied the full folders in, I meant custom songs with .ogg files are fine, but with .egg files they refuse to load.
I'd prefer avoiding installing song core, because it seems you then have to install mod assistant (edit - didn't notice that part of your reply haha), and you end up with multiple mod dependencies which will break in updates, all for the sake of playing 2 custom songs
BTW updating is very easy to solve by rolling back, check out https://bslegacy.com/. This way I update only when all necessary mods are updated.
Ugh that's a bit of a pain, what other required mods are there in your opinion then?
As I'm very selective about which custom maps to download (I'll delete any that are not up to the standard of the main game), I would very much prefer if all of them actually worked haha.
Not sure I understand what you mean by OST quality, for most experienced players OST seems awful today, devs have pretty dated mapping style to be honest. To find good maps with nice flow I'd advise to pay attention to the mappers names - most of experienced mappers have high standards themselves. Don't know your skill level, but overall can recommend Nolanimations, Checkthepan, Uninstaller for difficult-ish maps with nice flow and tricky patterns. For jamming stuff try Joetastic and Bennydabeast.
On Beast Saber there is an interview section with mappers, maybe it will help you decide whom to try. Also on that site there is map preview, so you can check it before downloading. Curated playlists are also mostly nice. Anniversary campaign pretty good for beginners. There is even remake of OST by Ramen Noodle. So quite some stuff to choose from actually.
If you are into competition or want to improve your skills, then ranked maps are the way to go. Ranked maps are being released regularly, and are checked by lots of people to assure quality. It was not so at the beginning though, so you may encounter strange old ranked maps. Try something with 3-4 stars difficulty if you are beginner, they are close to OST expert or expert+. 9-10 stars is like expert+++ by OST standards FYI.
They all might not be the best, but they're pretty consistent in quality. A few of them I find really fun to play, and a lot of the custom songs miss that mark.
As an example, my idea of a great mapping is like the "Tokyo Machine - Play" DLC, and a bad mapping is "Linkin Park - Given Up" (shame since I like the song). For the OST I might gravitate towards origins, popstars, burning sands, etc.
Curated playlists sound a good idea, but I'm not bothered about competition, because I can only complete a few expert+ songs without modifiers haha. I'll be referring back to your post a few times until everything is set up on the laptop, thanks a bunch for the detailed reply :)
Eww, think I'll be avoiding those :)
I'd be curious actually, I thought the mapping in this custom song was really well done for the most part, would you say this is the "outdated" style or actually alright - https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=yJuEfU1W8aA
Indeed this example you've shown is what we call nowadays as pretty outdated mapping. But indeed it's not bad, it's just quite old-style. TM Play is definitely a step forward comparing to OST, but still pretty basic. Biggest problem with old mapping is slowly moving notes which block the view, limit movement and thus limit the pattern choices. It's not that difficult to hit notes flying faster at you if you see the patterns clearly and notes spacing is not an issue any more. Also the use of bombs in old-style mapping to make map artificially more difficult is not appreciated by majority of players, it just the straightforward way to make a hate-able map. Nowadays bombs are used mostly to make player move hands in a specific way during pauses or to reset them before specific pattern, this way bombs are built into the music flow and not disrupting it.
To give you an example, here is one song and 2 different approaches to mapping:

Which fits the music better in your opinion?
This is what a good mapper is thinking when making it:

Based on your current preferences I think Bennydabeast is your mapper of choice right now :) https://bsaber.com/?s=bennydabeast
Just watch this, this is him playing his map, this guy is pure fire

Even if you are not into competition i still believe modern ranked maps would be useful to understand the concept of music flow in Beat Saber which is pretty much missing in OST. Then maps of mappers mentioned above will truly open to you, you will really _feel_ them, you will be predicting the patterns based on what you hear. Transition from old mapping to new one is good, quite difficult to come back to OST to be honest. Modern ranked means that there is a warranty that everything is perfectly timed and it's possible to score 115 on each note without hitting your head or controllers, considering the star-difficulty of the map of course.
Anyway, I download the mod installer, and was pleasantly surprised by how easy it makes everything. I've now got 500 custom songs up from about 10 lol. Ended up deleting a couple I thought were badly mapped but also favourited a few others (I quite enjoyed Fox Stevenson - All Eyes On Me and Legends Never Die). For now I'm not bothering looking at the authors, it's gonna take me weeks to get through that list :)
On a slightly different note - do you happen to know if Vive controllers are harder to play with than the Index ones due to the weight being at the end of the controller? I currently don't understand how people manage the note spam maps, destroys my arms even if I try Camilla on no fail :P
Indeed you are right about speed. Thing is you can develop reading speed over time, but no matter how hard you try you can't see through blocks, right? That is the reason why mapping style changed when people became better at game. For now pay attention to note jump speed (NJS) parameter of the songs and play what fits your reading ability. When you'll be able to react on 25 NJS you will be able to play most of standard custom songs. Also would recommend you NJSfixer mod, you can find it on BSMG discord. It will allow you change spawn distance and NJS for any map.
Vive are very hard to play with standard grip. Have a look at these:
https://i.redd.it/d6h5lxpayvq41.png
Point of custom grip is to move center of mass inside palm and remove rotation restrictions when holding a controller. Choose any which fits your hands and adjust controller setting in the game accordingly. When adjusting settings pay attention on simple up and down swings and horizontal swings, maybe with some simple diagonals - they should feel natural to you and give you linear (not 8-figured) repetitive swings through the middle of the block. You can install this plugin which will help you to see how you cut them:
https://github.com/m1el/BeatSaber-SliceVisualizer
If your arms are getting destroyed then probably the map as the most maps is designed for wrist play or combined arms+wrist play. Normally you use your arms only to position your wrists and slice with wrists at fast sections, and use full arm at difficult sliders and slower sections where you can use arm to gain accuracy. It's all about skill and stamina management. Basically you need to develop both techniques - arm play gets developed by accuracy plays (check out 115 guild discord, there is a campaign for that) and wrist play by fast jumps, vibros and standard streams.
Aargh I knew it haha, that's going to be my excuse forever now ;) I've sorta tried variations of those grips before, but found putting my fingers through the ring really limits my wrist movement, so I'll have to try find a position that feels more natural. On the other hand, I'm sitting on my arse a lot, so perhaps the extra effort with the default grip helps burn off more calories lol
I'll consider the slice visualiser, not for getting perfect accuracy, but just for seeing if there's something in particular to improve. I'm also hoping I can view a few of my replays with scoresaber as I've never actually seen my own technique. Perhaps eventually I'll see you nearby on the scoreboard, but I do somehow doubt that :P
MA is slow sometimes on adding mods from BSMG, but it's not because something is wrong with them, really. Noodle combined with chroma will let you play some utterly crazy maps from extrasensory pack, seriously recommend to check them out, they are mind-blowing:
https://bsaber.com/extra-sensory/
Yeah, playing with Vive controllers will be a speed limiting factor if some day you decide to storm the leaderboards, no Vive players in the top right now, unfortunately. But you still can become new accuracy God with them, or some mid-speed techy master. But no big deal, probably valve will release some upgrade to their knuckles in a year or two so you'll get those or first gen knuckles for cheap :)
There are plenty of things to achieve in this game and pushing further will open you more and more of it. It's like Astrella said after winning World Cup last year that the more he played the more he realized how bad is he at the game - I just can't agree more. And now he's a top player who was holding #1 for half a year. It's all about motivation really. I'm too old to get #1 global probably, but I think I can get into top 200 some day or die trying :)
Scoresaber replays are indeed useful, but first you've got to pass the map in top 1000 to actually record the play, which is not always easy. Setup third person camera using built-in camera smoothing - you can activate 3rd person mode in settings.cfg located at appdata/locallow/hyperbolic magnetism/beat saber so you can clearly see everything what is going on from some distance and angle. Camera+ plugin brings even more functionality but unfortunately doesn't work with replays AFAIK, so you'll need to record a video to see with it.
I also overdid it a little this time lol, my heart rate stayed at 90bpm all evening, definitely a sign I need to play expert+ more often ;) I'm keeping my eye on the Index price as I'll lose access to the Vive after lockdown, but £900 is way too much to pay for something nearly 2 years old.
With the 3rd person camera mode, will I'll be playing in 1st person, and 3rd person will on the monitor? We've been using my Dad's laptop for VR, so gotta be a little careful about adding the extra GPU load.
Heart at 90 after cardio is fine at first, you probably not used to anaerobic load, it will pass. Look that during sleep it's around 60 or lower, then you recover good.
As for the headset I'm pretty sure it's possible to get good with Quest 2. #1 in Russia now is on Quest 2 and climbing the global leaderboard pretty well. I'm now with FrankenQuest 2 and VRcover facial interface and it's just great. All together will cost around 450-500 USD and will give you far better visuals than Index and great comfort. Just make sure you are on nvidia GPU which is at least Pascal generation, it has good hardware video decoding which is important for Quest 2 over link cable.
And of course 3rd person will be only on your flat screen, VR will be 1st person :) And yeah, can imagine that running laptop is difficult.
