Beat Saber

Beat Saber

View Stats:
Constant Restart-loop
Game is freshly installed, on a freshly installed Windows 10 Pro. It was running fine before the format, now I can't get it to run.

What happens: I click play on Beat Saber, the game starts to load up and I see "Beat Saber" on PC Screen and in VR Headset. Then 3-5 seconds pass, then game crashes and restarts it self. This will keep looping endlessly.

What have I tried?: Reinstalling SteamVR and Beat Saber. Though it was already a fresh and clean install without mods. Closing steam via task manager in various ways to force update steam and steamVR. I've tried launching Steam first, then SteamVR, and then Beat Saber. Both through the SteamVR Menu but also through my PC while wearing the headset.
Everything yields the same results.

Can I still play VR in other games? Yes, I can play Phasmophobia without issue in SteamVR.

I cannot include any log files since none is created except for a player.log, playerdata.dat and settings.cfg

1. Check nVidia drivers. Latest drivers crash the game. Take previous ones (461).
2. Check error.log file. Location: C:\Users\[Your_User]\AppData\Local\Temp\Hyperbolic Magnetism\Beat Saber\Crashes\Crash_[datetime_of_crash]\error.log

1. Tried rolling back to the old driver using DDU and then reinstalling 461, still yielding same results. But as I said, I had it working just before it wasn't working. I reinstalled Windows 10 pro, then drivers, then Steam, then SteamVR, then Beat Saber and it's not working.
2. And regarding the log files, I was pretty clear, "none is created except..." which means I don't have error.log

Which VR headset do you use?

Oculus Quest 2
I tried both Virtual Desktop, Link Cable, 72hz, 80hz, 90hz, various resolutions, standard and custom bitrates, tried both LIVE and Beta patch of Oculus Software, and both is up to date. And worked previously on/with all of these things.

And if it wasn't obvious by me posting on the steam forums, I'm using the steam version of the game, not the oculus PC or standalone version. :P

Any specific reason on why you use steamvr instead of running it with -vrmode oculus launch parameter? I mean using Quest 2 with steamvr is normally a bad choice, when instead you can go native with much better tracking and better link operation. And it very well can solve your issue too by removing whatever interference between oculus and steam vr presenters you may have. When I tried playing through steamvr recently tracking felt so incredibly bad that I started to feel dizzy becuase of delays.. I think all this magic stuff with movement prediction with link just doesn't work on steamvr at all and I really can feel it, while playing native is like playing on CV1 but with better graphics, everything is super responsive.

Unless of course you already doing that, but then why did you care about steamvr in your original post is not clear.

I tried doing the launch parameter. But then whenever I launch I get this msg.
https://imgur.com/a/uNXYPaH

Stating "Allow game launch?
Beat Saber is attempting to launch...... blabla"

After that it just adds another instance of "-vrmode oculus" so it now says "-vrmode oculus -vrmode oculus" and it will keep doing that until I click Cancel instead of OK.
The game will still do as before and restart loop on it self, while now adding that dialogue box for me to click.

Then you are doing it wrong, you should add parameter through steam and not just create shortcut to exe with it. Look it up, it's easy. Like right click on Beat Saber in your steam library and go to properties and set it there.

Also when you uninstall Beat Saber you sure you've deleted all the leftovers from it's folder? I remember Sirautil causing issues like that.

No worries, not using a shortcut. Simply adding it to the launch parameters in the steam game library, inside the settings for the game.

But then normally it should never pop that stupid window asking about "are you sure"...

Maybe something is wrong with folder rights? Try moving the game to something like D:\Beat Saber and launch from there

Will try doing a move first, if that doesn't work, I will try reinstalling to a new drive.

Also try deleting settings.cfg from <username>\AppData\LocalLow\Hyperbolic Magnetism\Beat Saber, could be something is wrong with video cfg.

Deleting is ok, game will recreate it on launch with safe settings. When you uninstall the game this folder remains untouched.

If there are some user account/access issues then running exe with admin rights checked in compatibility tab may help.

Moving the folder to another drive worked. Finally we figured out what the issue was. Well sort of at least. Last time I had my steam installed on another drive, allowing me to use C:\Games\SteamLibrary instead of C:\ProgramFiles\Steam\ which obviously could give steam some rights-issues. I'm going to try and change the rights in that folder so that steam is allowed to do what it needs in the beat saber folder. Maybe that'll make me able to use the C drive. Simply because it's an M.2 SSD and I would love the speeds for Beat Saber. If not, I'll just keep it installed on my secondary, but slower SSD and it'll at least work.

Also, the game was already running with admin rights. So I sadly think it's either SteamVR or Steam that needs to run in adminmode, but that also break my mic in Phasmophobia. So another solution was needed and we found one. Did not try running steam in adminmode since that breaks my phasmo.

You can just keep Beat Saber where you moved it and save yourself trouble if game decides to update and ♥♥♥♥ up your mods a little bit :) Just keep -vrmode oculus, it's much better with it, believe me.

To benefit from M2 SSD don't forget to delete windows page files from every other place. Otherwise you only win in loading times, but not performance and microstuttering.
