Update v1.3.0 introduces lag issues (not fixed in 1.4.0)
Hi,

I was having no such issues before the recent update, but now the performance of the game is significantly reduced. There are several lag spikes during maps now, some of them consistently reproducible. Apparent factors are multiple blocks loading/unloading at once as well as walls loading in. Obviously, this particularly affects Expert and Expert+ maps and makes playing them not fun.
Playing on Valve Index, GeForce RTX 2060 6GB, Intel i8400, 16GB DDR4, game running on SSD.
Reducing in-game graphical options seems to help slightly, but this should not be the solution, since the game was running just fine before the update.

Edit: Things I've tried to improve the performance (note: none of this should matter, since it worked (almost) perfectly before the update!)

- reinstalled the game - no change
- removed all mods - no change
- decreased in-game resolution to 80% - slight performance increase, i.e. subjectively less/smaller lag spikes, obviously less visually pleasing
- disabled all RGB LED functions of the motherboard and graphics card (suggested by the BS community) - no change
- smooth camera is off and desktop window is set to minimum resolution. - no change
- it goes without saying, but I'll still mention it: no bigger background processes (browsers, Discord, Skype, etc.) running while playing - no change ( always been like that)

Edit 2: Tried a few more things.

- deleted "C:\Users\<user>\AppData\LocalLow\Hyperbolic Magnetism" - subjective slight performance increase (CAREFUL!, this will delete your in-game data and customization!!!)
- Turned down AA to minimum - no improvement

Just like a few others (also over in the general forum threads) have mentioned, the lag and stuttering gets (much) worse the longer you play. This seems like an important aspect for the devs to look at.

Edit 3: Default songs / campaign

I have no idea how this would be related, but it's very noticeable that the campaign maps starting from ~25 perform significantly worse than custom maps in solo mode. They're absolutely unplayable, actually - and I'm not exaggerating. I played custom songs right afterwards without restarting the game and it went relatively fine (the small stutters are still there, of course).

Hello, try to set MSAA to 2x.
Thanks for replying. I had already edited my initial post last night and added that I had tried playing with MSAA 2x and also completely turned off. Sadly it doesn't help at all.

Also, I want to reiterate this and make it extra clear: this problem did NOT exist in v1.2.0, not even at max settings, so any suggestions of lowering the graphics settings do not address the actual issue.

Clearly, something changed with v1.3.0 which either massively increased the minimum requirements past an i5 8400 and a RTX 2060 (which is highly unlikely) or there's some missing optimization for certain systems or even introduced a memory leak (note that the issue gets worse and worse the longer you play).

If I can help you with any performance logs or debug data, I'll be happy to help. Just tell me what you need and how I can provide it.

, for now im happy with just using 1.2.0,

Thank you for this suggestion. I guess this is the only viable option right now, until the team finds out what went wrong and pushes an update.

Not a problem @Oh_DeeR and i agree the longer it is played the worse it gets, and i would be happy to provide any aditional info, logs, reports etc myself aswell.
i played a 3minute song and i saw the reprojection counter in advanced settings go over 4000 frames, but in 1.2.0 the counter didnt even go past 10. so there is something that has been introduced in 1.3.0 that has cause some performance degredation as time goes onward. Just a note after one 3 minute song the game is virutually unplayable because there is just so many frame skips and frame reprojection that its just awful to play.

Not sure what else to say but something had to have been overlooked if 1.2.0 is fine and 1.3.0 is not.

Same here as well. It was working with no issues whatsoever before the update. It is currently unplayable after a few songs.

Thanks to Oh_DeeR for starting a proper thread for this :-)

I am having poor problems too, on the Index and I cannot seem to find a solution anywhere, music loads and plays before the actual screen does, cuts not registering, poor fps and stuttering.

Same issue with Rift S, before update was OK, now having lag spikes and slowed tracking sometimes
Destro 2019 年 9 月 9 日 下午 10:33
i get major reprojection issues now which i guess ties into fps drops and stuttering, i verified its the latest release cause i got a copy of the older version before my friend updated his game. which he also ended up having the same problems when he updated the game.

None of my other games give me the issues beatsaber now does, ive also reinstalled everything, and just for additional information, i actually had to restore and wipe my whole pc to factory (thanks to latest windows update) so nothing is installed as of yet. but beatsaber still gives me the same issues, and again just to clarify it never gave me an issue on the previous version. even when the last version i had alot of mods installed and pushed particle overdrive to 20000% yes 20 thousand % and never had a problem. but now i dont even have a single mod installed and just playing the OST3 on easy reprojection occurs wayyyy tooo often. so its definitely something in beatsaber causing this problem. cause again no other game or software in steam/steamvr has or experiences these issues.

same. was flawless before update and is now unplayable with huge fps drops and looks kinda pixelated too
Applekid 2019 年 9 月 10 日 上午 2:46
Yup. I have a topic about this on general discussion as well. The game is borderline unplayable because the game starts dropping frames in the first 5 seconds of every song. I fail before most even start.

Well, I've managed to at least get the game playable again.

The GeForce Experience updated the drivers and I noticed that it has options to automatically "optimize" games. Mine was optimized with 8x anti-aliasing. That seemed a bit high, so I knocked it down to 2x and the rendering scale from 1.8 to 1. The game is working smoothly again.

This does nothing for those not using Nvidia cards and I wonder if I'm getting the optimal experience, but just the fact it's playable again is a big step.

Here are my specs for the record:

GeForce GTX 1070
Intel i5-4460
16 GB RAM

Same issues for me.
I play in expert mod, when i see a lot of blocks and 1/2 red walls, the game lag for a second.
Very annoying :/
Before 1.3 release i played without lags.
I tried to change settings but nothing change in-game

Intel i7-4790K

Thanks Jombee. Your fix worked for me as well.

GPU frame times went from 800+ while loading the splash screen disclaimer, main menu, and songs down to 200, for much less time.
Also, I was actually able to get 144Hz for the first time in Beat Saber after turning off GeForce Experience's 'optimizations'

You're welcome, glad it got you back up. Maybe I'll try 144hz myself now...
Oh_DeeR 2019 年 9 月 12 日 上午 9:52
You should generally not install bloatware such as Experience unless you need it for some specific purpose (shadow play, streaming, etc.). Best case, it's just one more background process that slows down your system. Worst case, it messes with game settings in developer-unintended ways and decreases performance (as shown in this case for some users.)
It's not the solution for this problem, though. I don't have Experience installed and those who have, didn't experience the lag before the BS update v1.3.0 as far as I understand.
I tried a few more things in the meantime myself, such as deleting BS's Appdata folder (CAREFUL!, this will delete your in-game save data and personalization!), which was recommended to me by users who had had similar problems after updates in the past.
I don't understand why, but it slightly improved performance. The micro-stutters, especially when loading in walls, is still present, though.
Apart from that, I recalibrated my whole room setup from scratch, which helped with some tracking issues, but obviously not with the game's performance. I ran out of ideas what else to try (and I shouldn't even have to come up with such make-shift solutions, if the game was running properly).
I would really like the devs to acknowledge this issue, at least.

, for now im happy with just using 1.2.0,

i should not have to downscale every setting for beat saber when i never have in the past, legit No Mans Sky Beyond i run on ultra with everything cranked and it runs like butter.
Beat Saber 1.2.0 now after redownloading it with heaps of mods reinstalled and particle overdrive and crazy moving maps doesnt show even the slightest hint of lag. but version 1.3.0 in the menu there is reprojection issues.

The actual game on steam should allow players/owners of the game to go down one version in the beta selection area if they want to, for reasons exactly like this one.

i love the beat saber devs and team but cmon, it seams every time a new feature comes out we go back to square 1 with performance.
atleast give us the option in beta to choose a lower game version, then people can have their mods and no one will care how broken or glitched the latest release is cause they will always have the previous version and not lose their stuff.

And having the game perform the way it is in 1.3 if i could not downgrade it i would just cease to play the game at all till a fix came out. Im sure alot of people feel that way.

Thanks anyway <3
i know you guys are trying your best
