Install NJSfixer mod, it will allow you full control of spawn distance and note jump speed.

While the in-game Note Jump Speed will help you somewhat (set it to Farthest) some custom tracks just go crazy with sending notes flying at you at unnecessarily fast speeds.
Those are the times where you'll the mod fix those songs.

Well to be correct in-game you can change only note spawn distance and not NJS, NJS is changed only with the mod I mentioned AFAIK, and changing NJS will disable score submission :)

NJSfixer will allow more precise control of spawn distance than base in-game settings too. A rule of thumb for a beginner for spawn distance is 19-20 minimal and more or less equal to note jump speed of the map. The further the spawn distance the easier to read weird patterns but harder to hit accurately and on time.
