Beatsaber and Oculus Quest experience?
Okay, so I'm about to buy another VR HMD and am thinking of getting the Quest over the Rift S.

My two questions are this:
untethered are you able to play this from steam or should/need I get it from Oculus Store?
Can you do custom songs when untethered?

I'd buy it from the oculus store, should be more optimised for the quest I'd say?
But you can always use link cable.....

yeah that's what I was intending, to use the link cable. I guess what I'm asking is,
can you use modded custom songs on the headset when not linked... using the installed game.
(I remember their used to be a hard way to do it)
and if you buy it on steam, do you have to be plugged into the pc to use steam's beatsaber?

you can install custom songs without needing a cable. Youll just have to use SideQuest first (which does need a cable)

Ah SideQuest, that might've been what I saw when people were installing custom songs. That's good to know.

I've been playing Beat Saber on the Quest for a log time and it's just fine. Unless you want the literally best possible experience so you can push for being in the top 10, Quest will do just fine. I have absolutely zero problems with the tracking as well, and can play every Expert + song I am capable of playing on the Vive. And most importantly, it can also play custom songs. The only thing it lacks is some other mods that can be found on the Steam version, but if you don't care about things like calorie tracker or custom backgrounds, then you're good.

Also, it works surprisingly well with Steam VR if you do the link thing. You can actually play the Steam version of the game that has better mod support, using your Oculus quest. And the experience is basically the same as when I was using the Vive. No input lag or anything, everything works just as good as if you were playing it normally on the Quest. Actually, even better since the performance is slightly better due to the PC rendering the game, not your Quest.

From my own experience, I honestly can't see a reason to get the Rift S in this situation. Quest just seems like a more flexible and cheaper option.

Thank you DaBa for the expansive information!!

I trust the Quest's controller tracking, I've watched alot of videos about it and it seems fine and better than most. You answered alot of my questions playing it linked. I do really hope I can get my custom songs working in un-linked mode.

Yeah, Rift S, I was a Rift CV1 fanatic but Quest is offering so many things. I can't even believe it lets you link.

So far i am only playing with an Anker USB 3.0 cable because the link cable was too expensive for me. It's working pretty well with a 5M extension cable. I played Beat Saber, Blade and Sorcery, Boneworks, Half Life Alyx and Pavlov VR over Steam VR. So far i only had issues with Blade and Sorcery and Boneworks (both games lag sometimes... i think its because of the cable). Beat Saber works absolutely fine. I still don't know if it is worth to buy the cable for me because i don't really know if it will fix the lag in Blade and Sorcery and Boneworks completely.

I've got a new important question guys... To play Beatsaber portably, how and where do I buy the game? If you buy it on Steam does it "download" to the device? Or do you have to get it through Oculus? Thanks!

I hope it doesn't lag. I'm going to try it in DCS (I do DCS a little differently than some, I try to make it VR friendly and VR fun) That should tell me a lot about display lag. I'm getting a 3rd party cable too, and I have high hopes, the reviews were good, but unless someone really plays a lot of different games like you do, they may not even be aware of lag.

I'll let you know how my cable does.

I am using this cable and there was no input lag or any issues whatsoever with Oculus link https://www.amazon.com/WiRoTech-USB-3-1-C-C-Cable/dp/B07WFL18MY Although I haven't used it terribly often either, maybe about 5-6 hours tops. I just plug it directly into a USB C port on my MOBO and it works like a charm. Also it's a good idea to get a velcro strap so you can attach the dable to the side of your headset, otherwise it will dangle at a weird angle and pull your head in one direction, it's better to attach it so it runs along one of the sides.

As for where you want to buy the game, if you have the Oculus Quest, you buy it on the Oculus Quest store. There is no cross play, you need to buy it for the device you own. Unless you will only play the Steam version through Oculus link, then buy it on Steam. But I would really recommend the Oculus Quest version, not having to worry about the cable is great and it boosts the immersion by quite a bit.

Thank you Daba. With the link, are games as sharp as they are without the link? I've heard people say they are compressed or lower quality. Man I can't wait.

I mainly got it because I'm trying to de-clutter. this time last year I had controllers and Rift everywhere haha.

I can't give you a good answer to that, the only one that I have really tried through link is Beat Saber. And it's not the most technically advanced games as far as visuals are concerned. But as far as Beat Saber goes, it looked better than the native Quest version of the game, and it looked close enough to the Steam version that I played on the Vive before that I couldn't really tell the difference. The colours were a little less vivid when I was using the linked quest, not the Vive, but it's not a deal breaker to me. Can't say about other games, but I would say that this is probably correct if you compare it to the newer headsets. Vive is one of the first ones that came out, and I bet the newer ones look even better than it.

If you're only gonna use it linked with a PC, get a Rift S. And yes, you're gonna get some compression, since the USB C can transfer less data than a Display Port. As far as I know you can't install Steam games on the Quest unless you link it and play via Steam.
morph113 Jul 8, 2020 @ 8:57pm
By the way since not so long ago you can use link with the USB-C cable that comes with the Quest or any other USB-C 2.0 cable, doesn't have to be 3.0 anymore.

You can play the Steam version of Beat Saber on the Quest untethered however for this you need to stream the game to the Quest via Virtual Desktop. The program isn't for free though and the quality might not be as good as using the Oculus version of Beat Saber. So I'd say just buy it from the Oculus Store on the quest.

There are step by step guides online on how you can mod the Quest version of Beat Saber with custom songs.
