What I mean is, I would like to get the oculus go and I don't have any other VR headset to compare it with and I was wondering how well it works steam. I am aware of the fewer depths of field issue although I don't fully understand what that means.
Could I play any game using oculus go as the screen?
I gather my PC will stream to the oculus go. My PC is VR-ready but I just can't justify the cost of a good 6DoF VR headset.
Thanks :)
the GO is not capable of playing proper VR games, it is not meant to use with steam, there are hacks to do various things, but when it comes down to it, it is mobile VR meant only for viewing experiences, video, and simple games that can be played with a a single 3DOF controller.
DOF in this case doesnt mean depth of field, it means degrees of freedom, 3DOF means your headset and controller are only capable of rotating on 3 axis, roll, yaw and pitch. so if you are holding your controller for example, you can rotate your hand up and down, turn your hand left and right, and rotate your hand left and right.
with 6DOF you can also move translationally, so on top of the above 3DOF, you can also actually move the controller up and down, forwards and back, and left and right.
the go is a cool device but i would not recommend it as a way to get into VR gaming, and it is also dated already, as there are better mobile solutions out there already, although anything with better tech is going to be more expensive, like the lenovo mirage solo.
however if cost is your concern, but your PC is VR ready, why dont you get a cheap WMR set?
the GO is $200 for very little functionality, you can get some of the WMR sets new for the same price or a little more.
the best WMR set is the samsung odyssey+ but its $500 new, if you could catch it at its earlier sale price of $300 then thats the best deal in VR.
if you really just want to get into VR cheap though, then here is what i recommend:
https://www.amazon.com/Acer-AH101-D8EY-Windows-Reality-VD-R05AP-002/dp/B075PVLN2P
this is the acer WMR factory recertified, by all accounts a pretty decent WMR set, it's $180, cheaper than the GO, ive seen it as low as $130 before.
you could also keep an eye on ebay to find a good deal on a used odysssey or rift.
People always recommend the odyssey, but seriously any WMR model is fine, the Odyssey is just the luxury one.
