Beatsaber is the best exercise routine I have ever done.
I've been exercising for about 10 years and have done it daily since then. Beatsaber is by far the quickest and funnest method to exercise my body I've ever done.

I usually watch movies/tv while on a stationary bike, and let me tell you it's BORING.

So, even if you hate rythm games or don't like lightsabers, it's still worth it if you're interesting in being healthier or losing weight.

Your brain has no idea you're even 'exercising' and before you know it you're dripping with sweat and your heart is pounding.

Throw some wrist weights on and try to keep up with your top score!

Can confirm, between this and VRChat dancing ive lost a noticeable amount of weight. I regret it the next morning when I can't move, haha

That's dangerous for your health.

As someone that has excercised on a stationary bike aswell, i can second this. while playing beatsaber im burning the same ammount of callories i would be while biking. only difference is... its not BORING, and time literally FLIES by while playing this... now i actually have to convince myself to take breaks so i wont overwork myself.

I had problems to find the motivation to excercise after a work day as i felt like i had no energy left but now its not a chore.. its something im waiting for during the work day

I find it hard to even break a sweat on a stationary bike... my body is just so used to it. But beatsaber will make me sweat within 5-10mins. It's so effective.

How?

There are weighted wrist/ankle wraps or gloves that stay safely where they are even if you move a lot. You can get them from 0.5 up to 10lbs.

Obviously you wouldn't start at 10 but otherwise I can't see how this would hurt you.

Anyone have any suggestions on the best way to measure calorie burn during a session? Further, is there an auto-play function to try to reduce downtime?

I don't measure calories myself I just go by amount of sweat on the body, number on the scales, or by how my abs look ;)

I guess you could buy a 3rd party fitbit type of device that would count calories.

I tried it for about 30 mins (went through all the tracks on Easy) - worked up a sweat, although how much of that was down to wearing a headset and how much due to exertion, I don't know. Personally, I don't find sweating a decent measure of working out - I can go for a 5 mile run and not really sweat too much. But - there is some stiffness in my legs, which is a good indicator of use at least.

The downtime is a bit annoying - hopefully they add the ability to queue up multiple tracks.

I am no medic but somebody else made a good list of sources and arguments if you want to look it up yourself:
https://www.reddit.com/r/Vive/comments/4n7tm0/psa_use_wrist_or_ankle_weights_in_vr_at_your_own/

The fast movement with abrupt stops in VR makes it even worse.

I keep seeing comments and posts about using added weight with Vive or Rift and Touch, but this will likely only provide marginal benefits while skyrocketing your chances of injury. Weight is supposed to be lifted in very specific ways, you don't want added weight when performing some of the odd and overextended motions VR requires. Runners and tennis players shy away from ankle and wrist weights for similar reasons.
The dangers these weights create are related to the joint and the cartilage that hold the joints together, you cannot "train" it to withstand these forces. It's not muscle, it will tear.

That makes sense. I was thinking of those aerobic workouts where you're holding little dumbbells while doing exercises. But the movements are by far not as hectic as in beat saber.

Thanks for that.

That's why I am very suspicious about the whole concept of Beat Saber to be honest. Even without weights the specific strain that the game pushes on your joints seems to be on a completely different league with other VR games. Exacerbated even more by expert and now custom song I foresee a lot of wrecked joints of people who overdid it. And the game doesn't warn you about it, neither does it offer advice on optimal exercise routine.

I appreciate your concern but honestly people will become physically exhausted way before being able to 'wreck' their joints.

It's a very active game, so people are forced to take breaks even if they don't want to.

But yes, if you feel any joint, wrist or arm pain, then you should stop playing immedietaly.

Work up to playing on expert and dancing to the music. My entire body gets sore (like if I were to hike all day type of sore) the following day and soreness is a great indicator of a good work out.
