Why is this game so popular for a VR game?
According to Steamcharts the concurrent plays is at over 900, which is much higher than Arizona Sunshine or any VR game that I've played. But this type of game has been done before. BOXVR, for example, is a workout game that let's you play with your own music and is constantly getting updated (with multiplayer in the future), and yet it's only had 33 concurrent plays at all-time peak!

Because we are nerds and they gave us lightsabers.

Because, there are Lightsaber, and the gameplay is not generated procedurally. So, when you cut those block, they are in sync with the song.

I don't own BOXVR so I couldn't really compare. But if I take Audioshield, a game I played, Beat Saber is a lot more fun.

Its the same reason why audio surf took off, moving and doing actions to a good song just feels right for a lot of people, myself included. Personally I think people are flocking to this game mainly for the inclusion of sabers, and thats partially why Im interested in it as well.

The trailer hit like a bomb so the game generated a lot of popularity.

Combine that with stylish graphics and gameplay that looks like a hell of fun and you've got yourself a lot of customers.

This is only the 2nd actual Rhythm game to release on VR as well, and it is much more polished/fun than the 1st (Show Must Go On) which wasn't a bad game itself. VR has tons of "music" games like Audioshield, Soundboxing, Holodance, etc. but for old school DDR/OSU/Guitar Hero/etc. fans this is what many have been waiting for!

Only the 2nd actual rhythm game in VR? Dude, that's not even close to true.

I am going to have 2nd this. Audioshield, Soundboxing, Holodance, Seiya, Drums Hero, Beats Fever, AudioBeats, Music Inside are all rhythm games.

Because this is so much fun it's stupid. Lightsabers man! Duel fisting em. Slicing through things and dodging perfectly in sync with the beat. I feel like I'm a jedi (okay, sith) with a personal soundtrack. Once they release the level editor, I can 1000% see this being a daily workout... I'm sweating like a pig and can't stop smiling. They did a wonderful job with the existing levels, it feels so fluid.

I don't totally get it either. It's a solid game but I think its success over everything else is mostly down to promotion and timing. It had a slick trailer with lots of publicity, and most other rhythm games predate VRchat and Skyrim drawing a larger audience to pc vr.

BOXVR has multiplayer for few weeks now, AFAIK. :P I'm playing BOXVR regularly, and I definitely will add Beat Saber to my morning’s workout. Both games are great and fun, but I have a feeling that BOXVR is more demanding when it comes to fitness part of the game but I haven't played Beat Saber long enough to be sure about that. :P

There is a good side of so much hype for a game.I'm sure that some non-VR people are thinking about buying a headset just for this game. And some of them will buy it. And that means more VR users and bigger market. And finally, that means more VR games. :D (ok, I know, I exaggerate, this is an excellent game, but it's not a game changer :P)

i play a lot of soundboxing, i play boxVR, holodance, beats fever, audioshield, etc... and katanaX , fruit ninja
The concept of Beat Saber and its production are the best.
For the moment , i prefer soundboxing because i have the freedom to create my challenges on youtube music that i choose. Despite this fact, beat saber has already 10 accurate fun challenges with differents modes and real difficulties with a real sense of rythm (not like osu! or static over rythm game wich are more expensive and as beatfriendly)).

Add creator tool, add access to local files and youtube, add a mode for light boxgloves (in complement of saber mode) with a serious support (not like soundboxing) and you will have a real killer app. ( add a little support for subpac too)

It's an early access and it's already an polished game, Dev look like clever and serious guyq, that's why this game is so popular.

May the force be with you Devs and ake my money. Long life to BS !

Because it's actually frelling good. It's the simple basics, which let you be awesome in the weirdest way, while (almost) dancing to a pumping soundtrack. Also, it's not primarily a workout game.

The music is fantastic and it's all stuck in my head. Its challenging but not to the point where you rage quit. You just wanna keep going to get good. I have nothing bad to say about this game.
