Rift S vs Quest?
I know i shouldn't ask here, but i am just curious what people think. I am on the fence too, since wireless VR sounds awesome. I got a great PC though, so i kind of feel like i waste the potential. What do you think?

I was in the same situation and I settled on getting the S since I have a good PC, the S doesn't require the pylons, you only have 1 cord going to a pc (usb 3 and displayport are mixed) and it's just more powerful/more supported and will continue to be supported in the future regardless of if the quest is a hit or not. I got my S yesterday and I've already dropped some serious time into Beat Saber and am going to play some Sairento tonight and get Moss soon. So far it's been fantastic. I don't even notice the wire at all.

Quest does not have mods as far as as know. No mods = only OST songs, Most of the game is custom maps made by the community. Go for an S, Index, or a second hand Rift/Vive.

Well I mean the Quest has lower framerate, lower graphics, less official game support, a 2 hour battery life, and 1 less sensor. If you already have a gaming PC it's kind of an easy choice, no?

It's great that guy showed folks how to use the Quest to play non-supported games, however I can't help but notice the resolution drop and jittery bow movements. I would guess that he is down-sampling and using always on re-projection.

My mediocre VR rig plays Skyrim at 220% and 90fps though ... So Rift S for me!

So good! But to me, wireless is the future.

Framerate have i heard is not noticeably lower, the graphics is lower because it is portabble, the game support will be just as good as i have heard, it is actuallty 3-4 hrs with not very long charge time, and the sensor is no problem as i have heard.

I am not interested in 3 hr games in the VR on my PC, as i got a ultrawide monitor and many great games.

As for resolution, the game runs in a higher resolution, the quest has higher and the motion controls is the same for both systems.

You don't need to try to justify your purchase, because i already know you will have a great time with the S.

rift S if you plan on going the PC route. rift quest if you plan on being out/away or mobile. word of warning though: quest as far as i know does not allow for mods.

I'm just gonna go ahead and move my reply from the other thread over here for ease.

Erm check response in that other thread. You are accepting a large loss of frame rate and quality playing Skyrim on that thing. Skyrim isn't even a demanding VR game. Imagine trying to run Payday 2, Fallout 4, or Dead Effect 2 on that. I feel like you are over-hyped about that video bud.

Edit -> No it's not the same graphics as rift. You can clearly see reduced and even replaced textures, removed models, reduced resolution, etc. etc.

Just take a look at this grass. On Quest grass is just a green blob completely lacking texture.

Here is another video of Skyrim Quest gameplay with the comfort features not all the way up.

You can see he's lagging just looking around quickly and the game stutters when he moves.
Wow, you are really trying to ♥♥♥♥ on quest don't you? Well, you completely forgot it is that it is completely wireless, the gameplay is still there and the software will get better in the future.
........... Not really trying to ♥♥♥♥ on it so much as clarify that no it's not the same. The only advantage is that it is source-less and while that is a great start that is all that it is, a start toward something amazing. The drawbacks far outweigh that one benefit for folks who have a gaming PC. This headset is designed for those who don't have or don't want one.

Also feels kinda hypocritical to call me out on that after claiming there is no reason to buy a rift or rift s aside from "♥♥♥♥♥♥ wifi" lol. Rift S is indeed the superior headset in terms of visuals and gameplay.

I did not forget the Quest is wireless, but I feel like you are forgetting about the TPCast. Rift S will eventually have a wireless option as well.

To add on to my other reply and address your points:
Framerate starts at 72, add in always-on which you will experience in graphically demanding games not designed for the Quest and you are 36. Disable re-projection all together and you will see Skyrim in those videos is not hitting the 72 mark.

It's 2-3 hours for high graphics gaming from the reviews I read. That's likely just a rough estimate depending on what you are gonna do with it though.

Third one seems like an odd point to make, I have 1100 pancake games on steam that I played on my 144hz monitor. It all feels like a waste now 'cause I only use it when my friends are on for an hour or two at night. But I am glad to hear you don't just play one game for life.

As for resolution the quest does indeed have a higher base resolution, however without a PC to power it you won't be super sampling to the levels other headsets can achieve.

Oh and i'm not justifying anything, just sharing. I can't think of a way of sharing what I run at without sounding slightly arrogant I suppose.

You did mention you have a "good pc" so i'm confused why wouldn't you buy both? You have the power to enjoy high grade visuals, and you also have an interest in the Quest.

Alternatively you could get a TPCast for your Rift S when that becomes compatible and have the best of both worlds.

Now at this point I must ask what you expected. You clearly said "i am just curious what people think. I am on the fence too, since wireless VR sounds awesome. I got a great PC though, so i kind of feel like i waste the potential. What do you think?"

I'm sorry I didn't give the answers you were hoping for I guess? Confused how you went from looking for advice to dead set on the Quest in 22 hours lol.

jailbreaking android is not rocket science, so I'm quite sure modding will be a thing on the Quest sooner rather than later.
as for the framerate, I own a rift cv and a quest and don't notice any difference in that regard. the tracking is another thing. the quest requires perfect lighting to be up to par with rhe rift tracking wise. but that should be the same with the rift s since they share the same tracking technique.

Riftcat works. Try the info below for supposedly better performance. I don't have the Quest yet. Still rocking my OG Vive.

Good move. Have the og rift and quest. After playing the quest I couldn't picture playing vr with a wire attached to my head again. Also, can bring it anywhere. Pc based vr is going to go the way of the dodo.
Sparhawk May 27, 2019 @ 7:13am
Rift S all the way if you have a good pc. even with riftcat its not a good solution for now.. no full support for touch controllers, bad compress quality even with 5GHz router.. maybe one day, if someone make that USB-C passthrough work to connect with pc, then yes.. and ofc Rift S have better tracking.

Yup yup yup.

If people are that bent on wirelss they should just get a TPCast for now.

I know this is late as hell and an old topic but I own Rift s a Quest 1 and Quest 2 and the quest 1 is best pc vr headset between them all in my opinion just get a 15ft usb-c cord with bend and ur good to go or could use wireless streaming but why I like it best is the oled screens in it dont cause me motion sickness as much and the head pressure is not as bad as the rift s im not a big fan of halo strap or quest 2 with elite strap so I can go for hours instead of half an hr at a time on it and on expert and expert+ for beat sabre it seems to track slightly better or its the lighter controllers only downside really for me is like half the battery life on controllers wich a 4pack of rechargeable aa batteries solved that so even tho its losing reg non-pc stuff support in some games it's still a great pc headset regardless.
