Xbox Controller Singe and Local Coop Problems
The last update stated, that Portal 2 now supports Big Picture Mode.
I can´t see this. The Menus of this Game are terrible to navigate with a 360 Controller!

Singleplayer:
Not all Screens support Controller Input!
If i want to load Community Chambers from the list. I have to use the mouse.
After playing a downloaded chamber, i need a mouse to thumbs up/down and go to next.

Local Coop:
For the second player only the analog sticks are working. No jumping no direction pad. wtf?
Its unplayable like this.

This is such a good game. Please implemet the controller for every screen. And fix controls for Player2.
Thanks

I have the exact same problem. Two xbox wired controllers, one works perfectly, only analog sticks works on the other. I really wanted to play this with my roommate

I wanted to play Portal2 with my wife, coop 360 controller and keyboard, and it's not working! I can play keyboard on single mode, but not in multiplayer mode?
And now you tell me that I can't even play it with two 360 controllers?
Come on!

I managed to fix it. With the second controller, i was able to hit the start button and go into settings to change the controller layout to a different layout. from there, face buttons seemed to work just fine. i then switched it back to the default layout (simply because that's the best layout) and it continued to work. This still continues to work now after closing the game and opening the game.

This is still an issue in 2015 and this is the only thread ive found for this. What the heck is going on valve? Anyone have a real fix for this besides samiamirs quick fix? unbelievable that any random developers game works perfect for coop and portal 2 is unusable.

I know it's years after, but thanks a lot!
Can't believe this has not been fixed after all those years.

This solution worked for me.
Controller 1 was fully functional,
Controller 2 was joystick only.

I launched the local coop pressing X on the controller 2, then the game started. I went in the menu using Start on controller 1. Then in controller options, I de-activated them and changed the layout to lefty. Then went back to the game, and, using the keyboard, re-activated the controllers and put them back to the normal layout. Now both work fine.

Here it is a year later and I had this exact same issue. I'm glad I found this discussion.
Thanks!

I used XboxCE and put that in the same folder as bins and it help see controllers.

Before I could navigate menus and launch a game or save...But then joystick would do nothing
I had a similar problem. I wanted to setup a local multiplayer using two PS4 controllers. But no matter what I did, even doing what is described here, the 2nd controller's buttons/triggers/bumpers weren't working, only the analog-sticks, unless I unplugged the 1st controller.
I also made custom configurations for each controller in Big Picture mode, so the Controller Options in-game were pointless.

What I did was right-click the game in my library, chose Properties and selected the CONTROLLER sub-category. There should be a drop-box with the title:
"OVERRIDE FOR PORTAL 2". Click on it and change it from "Use default settings" to "Enable Steam Input". I restarted the game and it worked like a charm.

P.S.: In Steam>Settings>Controller>GENERAL CONTROLLER SETTINGS you can have each PS4 controller glow with a different color. I used this to visually align them with the orange and blue robot. : )
