I still wish GLaDOS acted a bit more like she did in Portal 1 though, more random, and more subtle undercurrent of evil.
I'd say GlaDOS. Wheatley wasn't annoying to me or anything, but I enjoy GLaDOS's sense of humor better.
I think she was less subtle in Portal 1 because she was hiding the fact that she was going to kill you. In Portal 2, you already knew she wanted you dead, so she didn't have to be subtle. At least that's what I think.
Wheatley was awesome and Stephen Merchant did a truly terrific job, I loved him and I'm really splitting hairs here-but GLaDOS. I could pick GLaDOS for Portal 1 alone, let alone McLain's brilliant performance in Portal 2.
Wheatley actually had a really interesting developmental arc himself, and Merchant nailed it, but GLaDOS basically had to deal with having her entire worldview rocked in the span of a single day.
Here's the REAL question: GLaDOS, Wheatley, or Cave Johnson?
Gun to my head, my favorites in order of favorite to least favorite (relatively) are GLaDOS, Wheatley, then Cave. But man, all three of these are just splitting hairs. I LOVE both Cave and Wheatley, both of them have some truly awesome lines, but I just gotta give Wheatley the edge. I just grew too attached to him at the beginning, I love his character. Cave is amazing though.
I think you're right. In Portal 2 she's basically toying with you and torturing you before she kills you.
The morality core also has a lot to do with it. When the morality core is destroyed Portal 1 GLaDOS sounds an awful lot like Portal 2 GLaDOS.
I didn't even think of the personality cores. That is a good point. Perhaps they stopped her from vocalizing her true intentions.
I've read some interviews by the creators, and I've read some reviews of the game by average gamers (I'm obsessed, I love the Portal games to an unhealthy extent). One of them noticed that Portal 2 GLaDOS's dialogue didn't sound like either her dialogue in the test chambers or her dialogue "backstage", but it DID sound like a less crazy version of her dialogue after the morality core was destroyed.
I think you can really see the evolution. In the test chambers, she's playing the part of the "simple computer" helping you along. Then when you get backstage she starts panicking and her real personality starts slipping through-but it's still not REALLY her personality since she's still trying to fool you and she's still stifled by the morality core.
Then after the morality core is destroyed all of the layers are peeled back. GLaDOS no longer has anything to hide, and she has nothing stopping her from acting how she really wants to. So she just insults you through these mind games ("it actually made shoes for orphans..."Shall not be mourned. Very official." "Your best friend the companion cube couldn't come because YOU killed him") while she tries to kill you.
In Portal 2 her voice has become slightly more mechanized again, as she has regained some mastery of herself. She's had a LONG time to think, and she knows exactly what she wants: Not just to kill you, but to make you her permanent play thing, her lab rat. She's completely in control of herself. At the end of Portal 1 she could act freely but considering the circumstances around her she had basically gone insane by the end. The Portal 2 GLaDOS is much more prepared, and that's one of the big differences.
Did she have time to time though? She stated that she had to relive her death over and over again. Was she able to consciously think while that was happening? I mean, maybe, but I always thought she couldn't.
I think so, because the point of that was to analyze it-and Chell was a big part of it.
