Portal 2 crash/.exe error/graphics error- POSSIBLE FIX
As the same with many of you, my Portal 2 would crash while loading a chamber or sometimes even the main menu. But I believe I have found a good fix for this error.

The 1st thing you need to do is this: Go to your Program Files (x86), next find your Portal 2 folder (Most likely under Steam>steamapps>common>Portal2). Locate the Portal 2 icon (It should say 'Application') Otherwise known as the .exe. Right click on this and go to properties and then 'compatibility'. Check the box to run it in the compatability mode of your choice. At the bottom of the same tab,check the box that says 'run this program as an admin'.

The 2nd thing you need to do is go to the same folder (Steam>steamapps>common>Portal2) and locate the file called 'videodefaults' this could be under 'update>cfg>videodefaults' or 'Portal 2>cfg>videodefaults'. Delete this file.

Next, go to the game and click on video settings and reset everything to default. The game should work now.
Please note you may have to delete the video defaults file everytime you want to play but it's not to much work.

Windows 8 here, tried your fix, it didn't work for me.

Sorry to hear that. It might be because your on Win 8. Everyone who told me it worked said they were on Win 7. When you're changing compatability, did you try every option?

THANK YOU SOOOO MUCH!!!!!! I haven't been able to play Portal 2 in at least 1 and half YEARS because of this crash. EVERYONE!!! THIS FIX WORKS!!!!!!!

Game works for me on Windows 8.1
