Changing The Portal Gun Color
Im trying to change the portal gun color. Not the portals but the portal gun itself. I got this file i think is the right one. Go to: C:\Program Files (x86)\Steam\SteamApps\common\Portal 2\portal2\scripts and find weapon_portalgun. Scroll down a bit and you'l find it.

That's really the only way to change it. Sicklebrick did include a download for the original file, so you may be able to use that and skip using GCFscape.

I tried to do the tutorial, but the link took me to a very suspicious MCafee site.

thing was from 2014, chances are that the original site is no longer up

They lost the original domain, it's now at forums.thinking.withportals.com.
