Portal 2 Multiplayer - Updating Friends List...No Friends Currently Available
I have just purchased the double pack of Portal 2 and am having no luck being able to join in on a standard co-op game with my friend, who is here with me on her computer, with the copy that I gifted her. I would like to know if this is a common issue and if so is there a way to rememdy this so we can play together.

I'm not sure if this is a common issue... but (if I recall correctly, I havn't played in a few years but hopefully my memory will be good) on the co-op menu it should say at the bottom somthing along the lines of "Invite" or there should be a "Play with a stranger" button, if you're on that screen I believe you can open up the steam overlay (default Shift+Tab) and open the "Friends" menu and invite your friend from that section by clicking the drop down arrow next to their name and clicking "Invite to game".

Again I'm not sure if that is 100% accurate but I believe it to be at least 90% accurate.

OK simple solution: you need to click the "Play Cooperative Game" then click "Standard Coop" then you have on your display a screen labelled "Invite Friends". Once on that screen you need to locate your friend in that list then double click their name. Once this is done underneath their name it should say "Invited" in brackets. For this to work your friends Steam name needs to appear in your Steam Friends list. Using the "Find a partner online" button is a really easy way to find partners but if you do just be aware you may find a partner that does not speak your language or have a microphone - both of which can make trying to play together difficult. The easiest solution to finding friends to play with is to make a post concerning "coop" or search in the same forum you asked this question. You may find people to play with quicker through the forums than through "Find a partner online". If you encounter any errors with this process I would be happy to try and help you solve them.

I figured it out. We needed to enable the Steam in-game overlay in order to see one another's friend requests.
