Portal 2

Portal 2 mucks up microphone settings every time it starts
Every time I start Portal 2, it does the following:
1. Enables microphone playback through my headphones. (resulting in a constant hiss in the audio and the sounds of my keyboard or me putting down my coffee mug being amplified; ugh)
2. Disables the microphone boost. (resulting in me becoming inaudible on whatever voice chat program I have open)

I then have to alt-tab and put my microphone settings back to normal in the Windows volume control before I can play.

Why? How do I stop it from doing these stupid things?

Hello Boksha. I have this problem with Portal 2 changing my microphone settings every time I start the game too! I came across this thread when Googling for a solution. Did you ever manage to get it fixed?

Hi Boksha. Sorry to disappoint, but I never managed to get it fixed either. I even tried editing my config file, but Portal 2 immediately overwrites it with the bad settings when starting the game. It seems Portal 2's audio configuration code is just horribly b0rked and Valve never bothered to fix it. :-(

have you found a solution?

I have not, sadly.

Sorry to necro but have you tried making it read only after editing the file?

It's been almost 4 years, so I don't remember. I very much doubt that would do anything other than preventing Portal 2 from saving the config file though. Messing up your microphone settings at the OS level is very likely done before the game saves the config file.

Too bad that video didn't work. Even set the file
D:\SteamLibrary\steamapps\common\Portal 2\portal2\cfg\config.cfg
to read only and it still sets my mic at 100.

I did, however, put the following into launch options and it worked
+voice_mixer_volume 0.53
