Portal 2
Why Rattman is NOT Chell's Father
Many people beleive that Chell's parents are Cave Johnson and Caroline, and that Doug Rattman is Chell's adopted father. I even beleived that at some point. But now I have proof it isn't true.
First of all, there is a part in the game (not sure where), when GLaDOS says there are 2 test subjects with Chell's last name: a man and a woman. This is clearly implying Chell's parents.
One person might (probably not) say: It is Caroline and Cave (they definitly won't say this). But Cave is dead, and Caroline is GLaDOS. That is clearly not true.
Second of all, someone might say that is is Rattman and an unknown wife. True, we don't know if he has a wife or not. But, Rattman isn't a test subject. So, it can't be that.
Third of all, someone might say it is just a coincidence. It WAS "Bring Your Daughter to Work Day", it might very well be a coincidence of a man bringing their child, and a woman bringing their child. It also might be that a husband and wife work at Aperture Science. It could also be Chell's father or mother and a different child or parent with Chell's last name. There are a TON of possibilities. But we don't need to worry about this right now. Why? Read the title.
Final Statements: So, I just gave my reasoning of why Rattman is NOT Chell's Father. If you find any faults in my theory, please, feel free to say so. I wouldn't mind to see my theory crushed. After all, that's what (part of) these forums are for (well, maybe not, but you can)
Anyway, that is my reasoning.

If we had one thing, we would have an answer...What IS Chell's last name?

P.S. If you know anybody who also came up with this, tell me. I'll say they did.

1. GLaDOS was possibly joking when she said about Chell's parents.
2. GLaDOS also said that it was a small world, so it could mean that it was just a coincidence.

The 2nd part: I said it could be, and probably is, a coincidence. Look at "Third of all".
P.S. Yes, it may have indeed have been a joke from GLaDOS. But, it never said it was. So, it is a possibilty. Thank you for pointing that out.

In the chamber where you can hear ratman muttering to himself, rather crazily I might add, some theorize that he says Chell Johnson. There are many theories to what he actually says, but more than a few that I have run across have listed him saying Chell Johnson. We also know that Chell's potato project grew to be so large, because her daddy had a high up position in aperture (I'm not sure where I got that from, but I know that it is true.) Who is someone that had a high up position in aperture? Cave Johnson.

I think I heard that before on Chell's science project. I'm not denying that Chell is Cave's daughter, I'm just saying that he isn't the father to take care of her. That's the point of this. On the science project, it also says that, "Mr. Johnson says we can use as many potatoes we need for our project,". Why would Chell refer to her father as "Mr. Johnson" instead of dad or maybe daddy? It's simple. He isn't her dad. At least not that Chell knows.

EDIT: It also says, "I asked my dad if I could do a different project because I already did a potato battery project in class last year and he said no, Mr. Johnson would get mad." That is further proof. Also, where does it say that "Chell's potato grew to be so large, because her daddy had a high up position in Aperture,"?

heres my theory on Chells parents and Bring your daughter to work day;
Notice how GLaDOS supposibly did her neurotoxin takeover of Aperture Science on bring your daughter to work day. In portal 2 we see a project that is Chell's, by the looks of the writing style and choice of words used in the project, it looks as if Chell was maybe 7 or 8 years of age. Now take a look at the Rattman comics, it only seems like a few weeks or maybe a month or 2 so how can Chell be a fully grown adult in the beginning of portal if she is in a cryogenic chamber, which stops her from aging? Also, how was Chell ever part of the test initiative if she was 8 years old and how did she get to a cryogenic chamber during the GLaDOS attack? Now jumping to a different theory, the theory of Chell's parents, many believe that Chell's parents are Caroline later known as GLaDOS and Cave Johnson, CEO of aperture science. But there is proof that this theory may be wrong or at least not 100% accurate, why? Because in Chell's project for bring your daughter to work day Chell refers to 'dad' and 'Mister Johnson' as 2 different people. There are a few theories as to who Chell's parents are:
1. Caroline and Cave theory is completely wrong and this is all coincidence. But, Valve being Valve, this is highly unlikely.
2. The theory stands and is correct, Caroline and Cave are Chell's parents
3. As can be seen in the Rattman comic, Rattman seems to care a lot about Chell which leads to the belief that he, along with another Aperture employee are her biological parents, not Caroline and Cave.
4. Agian, Rattman cares a lot about Chell, this might also mean that he adopted her from Caroline and Cave because they still wanted to be able to see their child but were to buisy to raise her.
But there is one big piece of missing information the Chell's age (as was mentioned earlier). For Chell to even be ranked in the test initiative system she would have had to partake and survive the test at least once, which would not be possible seeing as Chell is assumed to be only 7-8 years old on bring your daughter to work day.
My theory should put an answer to all of these questions including the time and age gap.
Here it is:
At the beginning of aperture or maybe a little later, Caroline and Cave fall in love and marry. Soon after that what would you know, they have a child, Chell. Rattman does not adopt her or raise her, in fact Rattman was born just 2-3 years earlier. This would explain Chell's age, you see she would meat Rattman when they were both young adults and he first came to Aperture. Chell had, as mandated by Cave, gone through the Aperture test chambers, that would explain her test rank in the Rattman comic. Rattman and Chell were in love, they would see each other nearly every day because they both worked at Aperture. This would explain Rattman's love for Chell in the Rattman comics. Rattman and Chell got married and had a daughter. Now Rattman and Chell's daughter was called Chell, after her mother. They all grew up as a happy family until bring your daughter to work day. The project you see in portal 2 is not Chell's but Chell Jr.'s. Now where was everyone during the attack? Well we know Rattman was launching GLaDOS and Chell Jr. Was at her project board. Now that leaves Chell. After saying goodbye to Rattman and Chell Jr. She goes to prepare for a second round of testing. Now I order to take the test, you have to have a temporary memory sweep so you don't remember anything about the chambers. This also meant Chell didn't remember her child or husband. She went in to cryogenic so that she could wake up in the test. But the timing could not have been more perfect, mere seconds after being putting to cryogenic, GLaDOS's neurotoxin attack hits. The entire prep crew with Chell dies and so does everyone else, including Chell Jr. Although Chell doesn't know this because of her memory sweep in portal 1 and 2 that is the reason that she never speaks to GLaDOS. Now Rattman survives and carries out the events in the Rattman comic. But he did not have a memory sweep so he remembered his child and he grieved losing her. This also contributed to his Schizophrenia. But at least he knows Chell is still alive and he will sacrifice anything to save her.
If you see anything wrong with my theory please comment. This theory was made as a way to close the issue as to who Chell's parents were and how she went from being a 8 year old kid to a full grown adult in about a month or so.
Hell, I wrote a lot.
Red Winged Beast Mar 10, 2015 @ 8:14pm
The actress Chell is based on (which is the best we have for age) would put her at around 29. Rattmann is about 28 to 32 as predicted by my mother. You can trust her on this she hasn't been wrong at pridicting some one's age yet. Plus a beard like that helps the deduction. I think Doug had a crush on Chell. Only some form of love could make some one go back into that place. Chell could still have been placed in the care of a scienetist or some one closer in rank to the CEO and even had someone name their kid after her for "never giving up" or something.

"First of all, there is a part in the game (not sure where), when GLaDOS says there are 2 test subjects with Chell's last name: a man and a woman. This is clearly implying Chell's parents."
Also Chell's last name is [Redacted] so that's just a data point. Maybe Cave and Caroline were REAL busy. JK on the last part. But seriously out of thousands of text subjects she can't be the only one who has a questionable background.

I'm very late to the party but maybe some one will see this. Here's this thing; we never see Caroline. Cave definitely is white. And Doug also appears to be white. Chell isn't white. She's described as Latin[a] with a hint of Japanese decent. (the wiki). So either Caroline is also Latina with a hint of Japanese decent (which is possible, just not likely given the time period during which she was hired; 1940/50s) or maybe Doug only seems white and has some Latino or Japanese blood, and some one else (presumably his wife) has the other missing genetic factors. So take your pick there. Same people think that Doug is actually the same age as Chell but her time in the cryo chins era has altered her aging. The same people also usually say that Doug whispers "Chell Johnson" and that Doug is in love with her. Personally, though, I'm here for the theory that Chell is Doug's daughter, and that (the cubes are people!!! This video adds further evidence to my theory and explains somethings better https://youtu.be/q5w6ieaTxGA ) the cubes that Rattman carries are his coworkers and wife/lover/Chell's mom. People point out that GLaDOS says that Chell's parents were test subjects and rattman isn't a subject, but I'd like to point out that Doug and most likely Chell's mom, were Aperture employees, and in portal two, many hints are dropped about Aperture's employee testing thing, rattman seemingly escaping it the longest (lab rat) but that would mean his friends and lover have been taken for testing, and have died, meaning that if GLaDOS does turn failed test subjects into cubes, they would be cubes. Anyway, aperature would have likely have entered all employees below a certain level (so Caroline and Cave wouldn't be effected, since when they start that, Cave is alive and Caroline is Caroline) directly into the computer as test subjects. Which is why two subjects would have Chell's last name. This would also explain Doug's guilt in the comic about Chell even being involved with and stuck in Apature with GLaDOS. I dunno. I've thought about this a lot. The only hole I've found in my theory is that when Doug takes the meds he stops being able to hear the cube. That would emply that they cube talking really is just his mental illness, unless the stimuli (?) that the meds block also happen to be the communications from the cubes. I don't know that's just the one part I've noticed is a little messy. But please tell me what you think of my theory! And lemme know if you see any other holes, or a fix to the hole I've found.

"Now I was theorising, so there is a theory that the companion cubes have humans in them. This theory has a LOT of evidence (Game Theory did a video on this), now at the end it spits up a companion cube. Now I was thinking, Chell's father worked at Aperture Science. This is evident on the potato "bring your kid to work day" as it show's Chell's name on it. Rat man (look him up, too much explaining to do) put Chell's life at top priority on the life support. I don't know if he is her father or not so I'm just going to say he is. He carried around a companion cube that spoke to him. Now, what if that companion cube that was shot out of the elevator Chell came out of is actually the companion cube Rat Man had. Or maybe that companion cube is Rat Man himself." [/quote]

Actually he put her as the first subject to be tested, because he knew her stubborness would help her escape

@lilyvain this is the theory I put in my review for portal 2. I actually came up with this but like I said, if anyone else came up with this theory before me, please tell me so I don't parade around saying its mine when it isn't

I looked to find your review, but I couldn't before writing this. I still can't find it. I promise I didn't steal it from you, we just happened to have the same theory. That makes it more plausible, I feel. I'm sorry, I swear I didn't steal it from you.
Icewallowcome Jul 4, 2017 @ 4:17pm
I just came up with a theory, so Chell has been in Cryogenic refrigeration for who knows how long, so what if Chell and Cave are Doug's parents? maybe that's why he mutters Chell Johnson?
