I just read Lab Rat, and since Ratman lives until the end he could've possibly used the hole in the ceiling of the Blue Portal Gun chamber to go to the moon. It would certainly make sense for him to do that, seeing as how his "final transmission" is a picture of his Companion Cube on the moon. He stated in the comic that he would've rather gone to the moon than be a part of the AI development, and in madness he actually did it. Why else would he have painted the moon phases in a ring around the ceiling of the gun chamber?
EDIT: I just thought about it some more, and while Doug going to the moon still seems more plausible, there IS a chance that he put himself in long-term hibernation as well. That would explain why you're able to hear his voice in the distance. Maybe he's sitting somewhere behind the scenes, catatonic?
Talking about? Uh... about what? Er... um.... uh...I dunno what you mean... hehe. Yeah. Oh, you mean the cube.... it, uh, has this kinda thing with singing, because uh.... I was already training the opera turrets and the cube was going to help... it is not a call for help from the cube... heheheh.
-As we all know from the Bring Your Daughter to Work Day poster, Chell's father worked at Aperture and was a high enough rank to obtain special materials from the company.
-Doug was a fairly high-ranking scientist at Aperture until GLaDOS killed off most of the staff in BYDtWD 1998.
-In the Lab Rat comic, Doug went directly to Chell's files and moved her from a position around #1500 to position #1 in the testing queue. In the comic, Ratman stated that he chose her "on a hunch" because of her unusually high tenacity. However, why did he automatically know to look for her in the files? He certainly didn't go through 1500 files looking for a person with high tenacity, as he was trying to escape GLaDOS and didn't have much time. He must've already known her.
-Doug kept a companion cube with him almost constantly, and whenever he stopped taking his pills the cube gave him advice. In test chamber 7, we see a companion cube (one of Ratman's trademarks) which plays "Cara Mia" (the song from the turret opera). When translated, the lyrics refer to Chelle as "my dear child" repeatedly and make emphasis on the fact that she is "dear" to someone. That "someone" is two people in two different situations; in Test Chamber 7, it might be Doug Ratman. In the turret Opera, it is Caroline.
-I've already stated my reasons for why I think Chell is Caroline's daughter (in another thread), and there's also plenty of evidence for that online, so I won't go into that too much here.
