Portal or Portal 2?

Hello there!
The question is as put in the title:
Portal or Portal 2?

I have a non-gamer friend, who never really cared about videogames. She said she tried Sims once or twice while still being a kid only because everyone and their grandma played it. Years passed and now she is curious about giving any game a try just for the sake of a little experiment. And of course I am super interested!

I believe Portal games are very much suitable for the task... although I can't decide which one she needs to play to have her attention locked on. On one hand, the first game was more tutorial-like if I remember correctly. On the other hand, Portal 2 had improved graphics and all, also was expanded story-wise, adding brilliant characters like Wheatley and Cave. Pointing out the graphics, because in terms of movies she prefers newer films to old ones.
Surely (?) my friend will not play even half of these games but I still gotta try. What if she likes it.

I would say the first one. Its super short and great. Then if they like it they can play the second.

I prefer portal 2, but kainda wish it was more darker like portal 1. But real answer to portal 1 vs portal 2 is...

Thanks for your reply! Oh yeaaah, both games are brilliant.
I opened the first Portal for my friend to try out... and she was doing very well! Took me by surprise, haha.
She managed to solve 14 rooms! but then had to stop cause of the dizziness.

+1 to Portal 1. Portal 2 is a bit overwhelming in this case.

Also might I interest you in this video series, guy got his wife(a non-gamer) to play a bunch of games, with little help, to see how a non-gamer would adapt. He had her play Portal, but I don't think there's a full video on it. Quite an experience.

Honestly, I prefer Portal 1 due to it's aesthetic, I don't like Portal 2's darker tone. But Portal 2's co-op and test chamber builder are a big factor that makes Portal 2 better!

Oh yeah, I've watched this vid some time ago! Also Portal 1 was a right choice.

Yeppp, co-op is so fun!
But I myself prefer the second game, my lore of Portal/Half-Life universe started with this one.

Portal 2 is far more interesting story wise + you have a coop mode

Both is good. (Haven't died a single bit in portal yet, might as well return to portal and portal 2.)

Start with the first, because your friend wont get the many references made to the first portal (the cake).
