I can't get past "The Surprise"

I'm new to "Portal 2". I've played it for a few months and made it through several test chambers until I got stuck in one that I can't escape. It's the one in "The Surprise" where Wheatley sticks its head in the wall and urges me to come out and follow. GLADOS sprays poison gas and closes the chamber behind me. From there, I'm stuck. I eventually either go left into another chamber and die from gas poisoning, or I go right and fall underground where eventually three turrets block me from a portal. Yet even if I survive the three turrets, the portal is useless. I can't teleport anywhere if there's no exit portal. Do you know where I am? Can you help me?

I think if you're in the spot I'm thinking (Low ceiling, enclosed space?) Stay to the left-hand side and go behind the turret, pick it up, then knock over the other turrets with it. Then if you look in the opposite direction of the portal you just placed, there should be a gap in the wall that you can see out of. Look out there and you should see a portalable wall.
