Go to the "Compatibility" tab & uncheck "Run this program in compatibility mode". Once I did that, it now works fine. Good luck!

I'll leave the discussion up so those who are experiencing this problem can learn how to fix it.

This is rather odd.
A friend of mine, whose computer runs on Windows 10, can play Portal 2 without any problems, but I just can't seem to be able to launch it. I've uninstalled it and reinstalled it, I've verified the integrity of the game cache, I've changed the compatibility settings, and I still can't launch it. Like I said, my friend can run the game perfectly, and he's also using Windows 10.
Is anybody able to help me?

Oh, you're kidding me. It worked.
Thanks for helping, I really appreciate it.
I wonder why compatibility mode doesn't work.

Windows 10 has been such a headache for most of my games. Some have been WAY more complicated to fix, but I'm slowly working through them..lol Cheers!

This is from your C: drive - from there, you can find your Steam folder under Program Files (x86), then the Steam folder, the steamapps folder, common folder and then the Portal 2 folder. Good Luck!

This means you bought it from another site. Or got it free by a program. This won't work.

Guys, I had the same problem and I tried everything, looked on every corner on the steam community and... I started the game with my controler unplugged from the USB port (steam controler / x360 gamepad) and... IT WORKED.

As weird as it can be, my game crashed 100% of the time at the launch (I don't even see the game screen), each time I have a controller plugged in USB.
So launch the game without it, and plug it later. It works ;)

See for me it was the opposite. I had to run the windows compatibility troubleshooter (under the compatibility tab) for it and it found the answer within a few clicks. I had to run the game in windows compatibility mode with windows xp service pack 3. I also had it checked to run as administrator as well. As soon as I did that it worked immediately.
