Would probably help others to help you if you posted your specs. It's working fine for me.

Same issue following a recent update in October 2015. Animated menus and the game itself stutter. Mac OS 10.9.5, ATI Radeon HD 5750, 20GB RAM. It was working just fine prior to the most recent update. Identical problem reported here: https://forums.frontier.co.uk/showthread.php?t=193820

This problem exists and is pretty bad. Valve definitely needs to do something about this. Now that the primary delivery system for games is electronic, people have no way of rolling back to a version that worked for them, so it is up to Valve to find a way to allow this. Even if your machine is out of date, if you could play a game when you bought it, there is no excuse for moving that game forward until older systems can't use it any more, without providing a fall-back version for older systems.

My system isn't new by any stretch of the imagination, but not that old either and, for a Mac, it is still a pretty decent one. I am running Portal 2 on a Mac Pro 5,1, I have recently installed an EVEA GeForce GTX 680 mac edition graphics card, am running 10.8.5, have 16 GB of RAM and have a quad core Xeon processer. Even my older system before this one could run Portal 2 great. Now all I get is start-stop, start-stop ( even during start-up and the menus! ), as well as a lag that builds during co-op until I basically can't move at all. I used to enjoy playing co-op with my daughter for years, now we can't do that because Portal 2 is unplayable.

I also want to second an earlier comment/complaint that Valve is basically unreachable in any useful way. I know it has to be difficult to run customer support for tens of milliions of people, but they still need to find a way to be responsive to customers.

I have the same problem as everyone here. The games used to work fine until a few days ago. The game freezes briefly every 6 or 7 seconds now, even during menus. Not unplayable, but very annoying.
I hope valve does something about it, not too hopeful though...

Ugh, yeah. Same here along with other mac users. I even made a post about since I was a little mad at the time.

Hey guys, I've been having the same issue, I'm reporting it to steam support with a link to this discussion, because last time there was a mac issue with one of their products, and EVERY mac user experienced it, it was actually resolved, I'll post here if they resolve this.

For now, I very doubt this will work, but try Right-Clicking on Portal 2 in your library, click Properties, go to Local Files, then click Verify integrity of game cache, it will check all files, and replace any broken ones, without deleting any mods you have installed, this works about 80% of the time when my other games have issues, but keep in mind it is unlikely it will work for Portal due to this type of issue.

I've done that "Verify" thing four times now with three different installs and even made a new user on my comp with the least amount of background applications running. There have been no differences in playability. Still stutters, always at the same interval, always for the same amount of time.

Is there anyway to access a previous build of the game? It was running perfectly before October 10th.

Same issue here on my Macbook Air 2014. I am currently upgrading to OS X El Capitan. Maybe by some miracle it will solve this issue....

I am experiencing the same problem on two Apple devices. Both do allow to run Portal 2 in high settings, but there is a consistent stutter. The problem is not alleviated by doing any modifications to the settings. It does not matter if the game is configured to run in high or low settings.

I can see that the Steam Overlay process in OSX Activity Monitor reports a crash every time Portal 2 is running. I did try to disable the overlay, but this did not remedy the issue.

This looks to be a problem that affects a wide range of customers!
