Weird Stuttering Problem

A friend of mine recently started talking about Portal 2 a lot, so I decied to replay it. I bought it years ago and recently deleted from my hard drive inorder to free up space. After re-downloading it and trying to open it I was disappointed to find it chrashing to desktop immediatly, with out even opening the window. I could find no solution, so I figured it was a problem with my OS, as I am using a Macbook Pro (mid 2012) and OSX El Capitan was just released. So, I updated my OS and continued to have the same problem. Then, aprapos of nothing, it started to work. The game opened just fine, but I encountered a problem once the main menu loaded. Every 4 seconds or so, the game stutters. The audio drops out and the game freezes for about a second. Whether I'm in a menu or a test chamber, every 4 seconds on the dot, the game stutters. I can't seem to find anyone with the same or a similar problem on the internet, so I am beseeching the community for help.

Here are my specs:

MacBook Pro (13-inch, Mid 2012)
2.5 GHz Intel Core i5
4 GB 1600 MHz DDR3
Intel HD Graphics 4000 1536 MB
OSX El Capitan (v10.11)

OP = Original Post. This thread was started before the one you linked to. Plus, the more threads surrounding a topic, the more likely the devs are to take notice that it is a real problem that needs investigating.

Solution to graphics and sound stutter that happens every 3-10 seconds on Mac computers.

It worked on my Mac Book Air 2014 and a friend's Mac Book Pro 2015.

Step 1. Right click on Portal 2 in your games library. Then click on properties.
Step 2. Click on the "Set Launch Options" button.
Step 3A. Paste the following into the launch options text box:
-console +fps_max 99999999 +cl_cmdrate 100 +cl_updaterate 100 -dxlevel 81 -w 1680 -console -refresh 120 -heapsize 1572864 -high -noforcemaccel -noforcemparms -noipx -nojoy

If you have decent computer specs then this should solve the problem.

UPDATE: If you have lag or texture problems then only add "-nojoy" to the launch options and it should work fine. The rest are performance tweeks that may or may not improve the performance of Portal 2 on your machine.

But the other settings made portal run smoother on my setup so i am going to keep them.

I have the same problem. I have a windows 10. The opening screen works perfectly fine, but in the game I get two seconds of play time, then a studder every two seconds. It is annoying and I cant play the game. I came here looking for a solution. so if anyone has one, let me know.

I tried this and it didnt work for me, then again im running windows 10
