Portal 2
This Game is Annoying For One Reason.....
Who's bright idea was it to replace GLADOS with Wheatley, I don't know about you but I find the bumbling, stumbling, supposedly witty British humor nerve racking. Its literally the entire game, he never shuts up, he's not funny, it's not cute, it completely ruined the cube-like psychological thrill that was present in the original game.

Yeah I know GLADOS talked a lot but she was a distant, mysterious, robotic presence who you didn't know whether to trust or believe. Wheatley is too involved and overbearing, so much so that it makes no sense for Chell to be a silent protagonist when Wheatley is constantly in her face, constantly nagging, constantly insisting the game is about him.

Though shorter and less complex I find the original game vastly superior to Portal 2, just for the simple fact that mystery remains intact and there are no distracting side characters like Wheatley!

I know I'm late like hell, but I like Wheatley. That's not really what I'm talking about though, Portal 2 is definitely better, in my opinion, than Portal 1. Portal 1's fine, but, as you mentioned, Portal 2 elaborates on things and plays with portals far more than Portal 1 ever did, and I don't quite think the presence of Wheatley in any way can bump it so far down in marks that it's worse than Portal 1. Both are great games, but Portal 2 is clearly going for more. Just more. Fighting GLaDOS again wouldn't be quite the thrilling conclusion, would it? The game seems to be designed with you actually getting out of the facility in mind, so I think learning more about this place you've been trapped in is a good choice. This all boils down to opinion, though. I won't tell you you're wrong for disliking Wheatley, he talks like hell, but I do take issue with saying Portal 2 is worse than Portal 1 just because of Wheatley.

In the rest of the thread, people are trying to explain his purpose. Right, we know Wheatley serves a role in the game. Multiple, in fact. Why would GLaDOS wake you up instead of killing you? Would it be fun or interesting to fight GLaDOS a second time? How do we reveal more about GLaDOS and give her an arc? Wheatley facilitates all of this. But, ultimately, whether you actually LIKE him or not is a matter of opinion.

There were also mentions of Wheatley not being funny. I agree. I think Wheatley is a more endearing character, which is why I like him. I never laughed at Wheatley. GLaDOS and Cave are who you laugh at.

Long story short, Portal 2 is a good game. I don't think Wheatley diminishes it's value in any way. If you really wanted him to stop talking, you could bind the "stopsound" command and click it whenever Wheatley's on screen.
I posted this thread quite a while ago but I haven't forgotten why I dislike Wheatley. He in my opinion is out of place in a Portal game, he belongs in Borderlands or in Phantom Menace with Jar Jar Binks. The original Portal was intriguing due to isolation, mystery, and to a degree the silence. Wheatley destroys all of that, with him around there is no isolation or silence and any mystery is completely erased due to his constant exposition.

Monty Python and Benny Hill were great for their time but I don't necessarily see why that brand of British humor is needed in a Portal game. With that said I would absolutely play a Doctor Who video game!
