Sure GLADOS was funny but she was always menacing and brimming with dark humor. Wheatley is forced, scripted, and breaks immersion. As if the devs don't trust the gameplay or intelligence of gamers, must have Wheatley say something every 2 minutes out of fear gamers will be bored with puzzle and problem solving.
He was made into the game as a annoying idiotic moron so yes he is going to be annoying, so deal with it. They aren't changing the whole story for a single player. I'm sure.
His lines sound more like natural speech because he's being portrayed by Stephen Merchant, a standup comedian and actor. Stephen doesn't do voice work/robot noises aren't his specialty. Wheatley is intended to be more of a living character and friend to you at the start of the game. What is it with everyone and "breaking immersion" these days? I swear I hear it so often I don't think anyone actually knows what it means.
If you don't like the character of Wheatley that's fine but he's received critical praise and Portal 2 is heralded as one of their best and most successful games to date. Don't shoot the messenger.
if you wanted scifi, well than you got sci fi.
portal gun.
gels that give you powers.
stop sh!ting on the game.
+1
But it was realistic game after all, that actually could happen irl.
Portal 2 had gigantic proportions and unrealistic actions (the moon scene for example)
mid stupid plot, but puzzles were hard and fun to play
In the rest of the thread, people are trying to explain his purpose. Right, we know Wheatley serves a role in the game. Multiple, in fact. Why would GLaDOS wake you up instead of killing you? Would it be fun or interesting to fight GLaDOS a second time? How do we reveal more about GLaDOS and give her an arc? Wheatley facilitates all of this. But, ultimately, whether you actually LIKE him or not is a matter of opinion.
There were also mentions of Wheatley not being funny. I agree. I think Wheatley is a more endearing character, which is why I like him. I never laughed at Wheatley. GLaDOS and Cave are who you laugh at.
Long story short, Portal 2 is a good game. I don't think Wheatley diminishes it's value in any way. If you really wanted him to stop talking, you could bind the "stopsound" command and click it whenever Wheatley's on screen.
