What happens to this game when Steam breaks on XP?
So, this game works PERFECTLY on my XP machine right now. Over 60 fps with max settings, no stutter, no crashes ever. So, when XP is cut off by steam are you going to fix this so it will still run? That would be nice. How about making this old game steam-less and just disable the steam dll (probably just take remarking out the call in the code) making it drm free? Well? Are you going to offer ANYTHING?! I mean I paid full price for this would be nice if it doesn't just BREAK. How about creating a very simple loader for xp that only checks the license which you never have to update? I mean you've already broken all the discussion forums for the XP client (yes, I noticed), so how about it?

I'm not sure. Just in case it'll break, go on offline mode before support for XP ends.

nobody really has windows xp anymore so they never bothered trying to add support for it. i dont know if i fully understand whats going on here though.

ya, offline mode seems like it would be a good idea, but my experience with it seems to prove that it only works for a while and then it gets grumpy and asks to re-connect. It also depends on how smart the update is. With World of Warcraft all of the games committed suicide by updating to a version that was incompatible and then they all broke. I mean they could have just popped up a message, but, stupidly, they took all the time to download the new version and then, after I sat around and waited for it to come down, dived on their sword and died. So, if steam does the same thing, overwrites the working version with one that doesn't work, then you're instantly dead the second you reconnect the box. But we'll see.

Right, there aren't many of us running XP still, but that still doesn't give them the right to take away things I've paid for and love. They would tell you it's a cost issue, but the simple thing to do is just freeze the current version of the client (do nothing basically) and when they detect a box is running XP they download the frozen client or, if the last version is already there, do absolutely nothing. They can put all kinds of warnings up if they like, break the store if they want, disable the comments (which they have ALREADY done, btw), all I'm asking for is to just be able to still run the old games on an old box. Come on steam, you don't have to do more than a few hours of work!

they're not doing it on porpose. it may not even be something to deal with the game its probably just becasue windows xp is very outdated or it has corrupted system32 files or things like that. if you dont run antivirus programs like malware bytes i would highly recommend downloading malware bytes free version and run a scan on it. there could be some viruses that are causing the ram or cpu to overload then the computer being forced to shut down portal 2 so it doesn't over heat and combust. also it doesn't take just a few hours to release a update to fix a entire os compatibility. i dont know how long it takes but id say it ranges from a few months to a few years.

There isn't any problems with viruses or malware on this machine. I've been using XP every day for 20 years and I've never had an infection. I have a great firewall, I use noscript on all browsers, I monitor CPU and network traffic very carefully and I have very strong tools to remove anything including hidden processes, services, and any other unrecognized processes. The problem isn't with XP it's working perfectly, it's that steam is stopping it from working on XP. They're going to change the client so it doesn't work anymore on purpose in 112 days from right now. At the top of my screen it says "Steam will stop running on XP in 112 days." The problem isn't with XP or my box -- the problem is that they are breaking it on purpose. Take a look at their announcement. It explicitly says they are doing it. There is no mystery here, they are breaking my system on purpose and they explicitly say so. Check out their announcement.

Oh yes BTW here's exactly what the steam announcement says: "In order to continue running Steam and any games or other products purchased through Steam, users will need to update to a more recent version of Windows."
Pretty clear... they are breaking all of the games on XP on purpose.

Watch your butt guys... there is nothing stopping steam from doing the same to Windows 7 (or 8, or an old version of 10) whenever they want. Remember the END of full support for Windows 7 happens in less than 2 years better not get too attached to all the games you bought!

People still use xP? That's kinda surprising really. Hopefully it's something more than just IE 6 we are talking about here...

No that just means they cant run it on windows xp due to windows xp not having support for what steam requires to run. steam isint microsoft THEY'RE VALVE they have no access to changing the windows xp operating system to have the correct software for it. one of my guesses is that the latest framework version that microsoft made for windows xp is starting to get to outdated because as steam continues trying to not bluescreen and corrupt peoples s**t on modern technology they have to make sacrifices to the old 2001 operating systems.

It doesn't matter how carfully you try to make sure it doesn't get a virus. just being connected to the internet in general can cause a virus to get into your pc. and if your THAT protective over it why cant you just stop doing that then do the 1000x easier solution from just getting malware bytes. you dont need to do any of that.

Connecting to the internet shouldn’t ever give you a virus.

Well, check out the infection statistics for the wanna cry virus. Probably the worst one recently. At the time XP accounted for about 8% of the MS computers and Microsoft didn't even bother to release any patches for xp until after the worst of the outbreak. So, you'd expect XP infection rates to be at least as high as for all of the other MS opsyses maybe even double... say about 16% of the total? Nope. 10% of the total? Nope. 8% of the total (getting infected at the same rate as the other MS opsyses)? Nope. Get this... Windows 7 (patched much better than XP at the time) accounted for 97% of the infections with XP less than 1%!! Don't believe me check out the statistics.

You'll find similar statistics wherever you look. It turns out XP isn't all super scary like the Microsoft guys claim. Hmmm.. Even after NO SUPPORT for over 4 years. Maybe our buddies at Microsoft are just trying to get your money and data. That certainly seems more likely to me.
