what is the enrichment center "enriching" anyways

so maybe i just missed out on this part of the game, but i dont really know what the heck the testing is for. i mean, there is nothing that seems to need to be tested: the portal gun, and gels have been in use for al long time (ok not necesarily the portal gun itself, but the technology that is used to make portals), the turrets seem to be ok (and also sold in boxes for some reason (home defense???)) the cubes are also unchanged (in fact, apparantly there is a surplus of companion cubes, according to GLaDOS) and whatever is tested can also be tested with robots (wheatly says he found 2 robots that were made for testing) so what is it that is even being tested?

i mean thant kind of makes sense, if the goal was to study or enrich human behavior/reactions, than it would explain the companion cube's test chamber in Portal.

having recently finished portal, i have even more questions
the most important question of all being:
HOW THE FRICK FRACK IS THE MAIN CHARACTER NOT DEAD FROM BEING IN SPACE (also how can the wheatley and space core talk in space, but thats less important)

They could talk in space because all the air was rushing out through the portal, which the sound waves travelled through.
