Portal 2 Crashes on Launch
SOLVED When I load up Portal 2 and any mods associated with it my game will attempt to load for 2 seconds then stop, it doesn't even pull up the game. I've tried every fix I can find on the forums and on YouTube and not one thing seems to work. Does anyone have a fix for it?

I am (and have been) experiencing the same issues. My specs are as follows:
Windows 10 / Ryzen 5 3600x / 2060 Super / 3200 16gb / 3 Monitors (2 display port, 1 HDMI)

I tried the "compatibility mode" fix, I tried running as administrator, I tried power cycling, uninstalling and reinstalling... I abandoned all my mods and workshop files to try and fix the game. It's incredibly frustrating that if you google around, you'll not find any information about the latest issue. This DOES seem, by the way, to be a recent issue.

How did I fix it? I unplugged my HDMI monitor. I'm not kidding.

Annoyingly, and maybe somebody more intelligent can explain why - when my display port monitors are off, my computer does not recognize them as being plugged in. The HDMI monitor, on the other hand, whether off or not, is still recognized (and sometimes even utilized) by certain programs. I run into issues with VLC opening on the (often switched off) HDMI monitor, Windows Explorer, Discord... and I think in this case, Portal 2 is also prioritizing my (powered off, but plugged in) HDMI monitor.

The fix was to literally unplug the HDMI cable from the monitor. Soon as I did, the game opened up just fine. Hope this helps some of you, and I'll try to maybe report it as a bug if the developers are even still interested in our niche hardware issues.
Well this fix seemed so crazy and out of the blue I figured it just had to work but sadly this doesn't seem to be the issue with it on my PC. I'm running two monitors and I tried every combination of cords being plugged and un-plugged on my monitors to try and get it to work but none of them seemed to work, I think i'm going to try a different cord and see if that for some reason fixes it.
Nope this didn't work either.

I've had the same problem for a few days now. I've tried everything people have suggested and today i found unplugging my keyboard then pressing play fixes it. Every time i want to play i have to unplug my keyboard press play then plug my keyboard back in. Hope it helps!

Okay so I found a fix with this stupid problem, I'm not sure what the issue was but open up your cmd (run as administrator) and type this in order:

net stop winmgmt
winmgmt /resetrepository
net start winmgmt

After this restart your PC and it should fix.

None of these fixed it for me but glad to see others have found their own fixes! Worrying that is has become an issue as of recently.

Another thing to add, If you have the Razer Hydra DLC for portal 2, make sure that isn't installed, cause that could cause problems for the game running!
You sure?

BRO!! THIS FRICKING WORKED!!!!! I have tried everything dude. EVERY SINGLE THING. And I am on a laptop. Your comment made me think of something F8 in my laptop changes the monitor which the laptops screen is shown and I pressed it without being connected to any monitor then started the game and it worked right away. Thank you soooo much.

I'm glad that helped you, and also very sad to see this is still such an issue. My fix has eventually become... just, not playing the game anymore lol. Regrettable, but the issue still hasn't been fixed. If I want to play the game, I literally have to rearrange the cables plugged into my monitors, and that just is not worth it. Really bummed about it
