Crash on start. . .FIXED
New to Portal. Just bought it here and it crashes w/o starting. no error noted.
Tried verify integrity and turned off in-game overlay
Tried restarting PC.
Tried msconfig-disable all background services-restart to no avail.
Tried compatibility.
Tried run as admin.
Tried restart and go offline then again back to online workaround.
Tried McAfee real time exception and turned off firewall.
Tried putting -dxlevel 90 in the launch options as well as -safe and -autoconfig
Tried launching from desktop shortcut, steam, and .exe in local files.
Tried moving the game folder (thru steams button) from F to C. It did produce a window with different behavior but still no launch.
Tried launching without MSI afterburner in background (caused constant crash with mudrunner for me dont ask how idk)
Tried sacrificing a lamb to the cult god Gaben.

Nothing has worked.
Steam up to date.
win10 PRO 64bit. Up to date.
ryzen 2600
16GB ram @3000
SSD
GTX1070 Driver is up to date.

Ive done a hail mary and sent a ticket to support.
Its rare though that support can actually fix an issue from what Ive seen in my life. Would like to try such a highly regarded title but its a shame its dead in the water.

Resolved!..?
last thing I tried was redownloading geforce experience. hit optimal settings for portal 2 in the app. hit launch. steam said it was missing an anti cheat file or something. DL it.
Then opened msconfig to ensure all of steams services load on start (see post above on msconfig) and restarted. then closed the geforce app on home screen and MSI afterburner.

Now it works. after testing just now I confirmed MSI afterburner causes it to immediately crash on start. Even though I tried it before..

For anyone else struggling with Portal 2 not launching on Windows 10, crashing at launch, white/black screen these are steps that worked for me and got the game working.

1) Disable compatibility mode. Find "portal2.exe" in steamapps/common/Portal2 and disable compatibility mode.

2) Close MSI afterburner if you are running it.
