D3D Device Error
I'm getting really frustrated trying to fix this error. I used to play the game just fine on Windows 8 and now can't run it at all. I get this error:

Head 1 device id invalid (1)

Failed to create D3D device

I've tried reinstalling the game, adding resolution and -dxlevel 81 or 90 in launch options, reinstalling gpu drivers with DDU, verify local files, run in compatibility mode for Windows 7 or 8 (these result in no error, just never opens). What do you think can be done to fix it? Steam support told me to just look at their page and if it doesn't work, contact a technician.

usually a driver issue:
https://support.steampowered.com/kb_article.php?p_faqid=772

check windows update history - maybe it failed.
check windows event viewer - maybe game/system error
in windows search box run
perfmon /rel
and click on the red X's. might be system related error msg

@cheshirm I had given up and used my Ubuntu install to play the game but your suggestion for the Windows Event Viewer was great. I get a bunch of EventID 10006, "The application-specific permission settings do not grant Local Activation permission for the COM server application with CLSID and APP ID." How would I go about fixing this?

might have nothing to do with the game. might be a windows system problem. look up the clsid and appid. I installed the game on win 7 and win 10 - didnt have to do anything special to get game to run. maybe post your system specs and someone might spot something (steam/help/system information - copy/paste everything here)

It worked on the same system before, idk why it doesn't work anymore. I ended up going into regedit and modifying permissions for the appid and clsid to no avail. This is the only game that doesn't run on my system so I think it's both a windows and application specific problem

just ran it to make sure. works on win 10 and nvidia 417.01

maybe uninstall or use DDU current driver.
reboot.
clean install latest driver
reboot.
