Can't invert portal colors with Xbox 360 controller
Hi everyone! :)
I'm writing because I spent the last 2 hours trying (and failing) to configure my Xbox 360 controller for Portal 2.
While in game, the cursor shows the the 2 portal colors - blue on the left and orange on the right. But every Xbox controller configuration for the game has "Orange portal" set on the LT button and "Blue portal" set on the RT button. This makes it a bit annoying for me to play whenever the game requires some "platforming" or time based actions, because I keep forgetting that the portal colors are reversed than how they show on screen and I often mess up.
Of course I tried to change the controller configurations many times, setting "Blue portal" on LT and "Orange portal" on RT, then saving and importing locally the new configuration. It saves and everything seems just fine, but no matter what I do, when I play the LT and RT buttons always spawn the Orange portal on the left and the Blue portal on the right.
Setting a new configuration for he keyboard and mouse works great, every key that I select in the options registers correctly (I simply chose Blue portal with left mouse click and Orange portal with right mouse click). So why do my controller settings stay the same? No matter how many times I try to reverse the portal colors, nothing changes when I play.
I know I could simply play with the keyboard and mouse, but I already played Portal 2 on console years ago and I'd like to enjoy this amazing game sitting comfy on the sofa.
It's probably something very simple that I'm overlooking... any help would be appreciated!

Oh, I forgot to mention that days ago I was using a modified PS4 controller with a dualshock configuration and it worked great. Today, for some weird reason, I opened the game and it didn't work anymore. :(
I tried to download another dualshock configuration, but now they all do the same thing: either I can't move or the portal gun constantly shoots portals (without me touching anything). Every time I try to change the buttons setting, it saves in the configuration but not in game. That's why I skipped to the XBox controller, at least with that I can actually move around and play the game! :D
I'm confused, this is supposed to be one of the few games in my library that should support a controller, yet it's the only one I can't use a controller with and can't change the buttons setting correctly. :steamsad:

Just stick with it, it's not that big of the problem. Blue portal is on the right since you use your second finger to spawn them both with mouse and controller. Think about it.

Thanks for replying! :)
I get what you mean, you're right. I love this game, but it would be nice being able to simply set other controllers to work properly with this game. The Xbox one works but the buttons can't be reassigned. The PS4 controller (which somehow used to work for me, about 1 week ago) instead makes the game unplayable, spamming blue portals even without me clicking on anything and pausing the game every time I press the R2 button, and again the buttons can't be reassigned. I tried so many different configurations but unfortunately they all have the same issue. It's a shame that Portal 2 doesn't support every controller... oh well. :(

It supports only xbox like controllers

Well, not exactly, since the controls configuration can’t really be remapped on the Xbox controller.
Also, the strangest thing: whenever I turn on the game, the controller configuration doesn’t work anymore. I can’t move or turn the camera around and I have to choose another Xbox controller configuration (doesn’t matter which one), only then it’ll work normally again. I don’t know what’s wrong, this is the only game that gives me so many issues. Could it be because I’m playing with a Mac? :(

Could be the mac, could be that most games support the wired xbox controllers, and many do not support the playstation controllers at all except with add on dlls and such that can really bork your system, even permanently sometimes. After playing with playstation controllers for years I was thrilled to go to the much more stable and accepted xbox controllers.

Anyway, if you want to run around in-game configurations, it's dirt simple. Get a copy of Xpadder (pay for the full version, it's well worth it) and/or try the latest version of the steam controller config software built into Steam now. It has a native Xbox controller config option full of nifty choices and assignment to any game you want.

Don't ask me how both of those work or where they're found, the internet is full of info.

Have fun

Thank you, I'll definitely check it out! :steamhappy:
