Local Co op - characters stuck moving backwards

so i wanted to play local splitscreen with a friend and i worked out how to do that. But when i connected my 2 xbox controllers to the macbook and started to play co op mode, the characters started to move backwards as soon as they dropped in. The only solution i found was to spam the point gesture on both controllers otherwise, both robots would start to walk backwards.
I can look around and shoot portals but if i turned around my character would walk backwards without me moving anything or pressing anything.
Anyone know how to fix this?
