Portal 2
Issues with macOS Catalina
Portal 2 will not run on macOS Catalina. Are there plans to update it to work with the latest version of macOS?

Yeah, Apple are pretty ruthless when it comes to forcing the industry forward...

Unfortunately for their customers, this means that their stuff is often incompatible with a large segment of the industry that hasn't caught up yet. They do this all the time, then you're left with a choice between the latest Mac stuff and being able to use old stuff.

I don't think game devs will update their old 32bit only games to 64bit unless Windows also drops support for 32bit applications, which I don't think will happen until the next major Windows release, if it even happens then. It's probably just best to stay on High Sierra until that happens.

Any word on whether we'll see an update? Mac users are usually pretty good at updating to the latest OS - Catalina being free for all compatible hardware.

I also would love to be able to play Portal 2 on my mac again running Catalina/Big Sur, but I'm afraid nothing is going to be updated as it seems Apple hates serious gaming. I've always liked the stability running games on MacOS. First they drop 32 bit, then they are transitioning to another CPU platform. The whole time they won't build a machine that has a decent video card, nor make a machine that's somewhat affordable to put one in. (No, hackintosh doesn't count) I'm waiting to see what the CPU transition will bring, but I'm afraid I will be disappointed by Apple for the last straw and have to abandon the platform. They used to care about having great machines for people. Now it seems it's just about profit and how much they can charge for substandard hardware. I can't blame devs for leaving the platform altogether.

I do wish Valve would say something about the 64 bit/CPU transition.

Try macOS Big Sur or Windows. Or just try an earlier version of macOS.

On my windows laptop it's like 30 fps, but it's weak.

Or just use El Cap.

Valve really need to get the source engine updated to ensure all their games run again.

If it helps, I have successfully got Portal and Portal 2 to run on an M1 MacBook Pro via CrossOver. Portal has some serious artifacts that look to me like z-fighting whenever the camera moves, which may cause seizures and makes the game just about unplayable. Portal 2 is much better, suffering only minor glitches with portal rendering. Portal 2 so far is still playable.

no. Apple should stop removing features than 3rd party programs rely on, first 32 bit support, then OpenGL, what next?.

i know its not a real solution but to anyone who still wants to play their games and has free space left i advise you to use Bootcamp and install a Windows Volume on your Mac. Its really easy to boot into and is a good alternative to installing Mojave or earlier on newer hardware that doesn't support it anymore.
