MacOS Catalina: Will Portal 2 be updated to 64 bit?
So, first let me establish that I am aware of the fact that I am the minority as a Mac user on the Steam platform. Having said that, I would like to point out that Portal 2 is often regarded as one of the, if not 'the' best games available for Mac. Frankly, I want to see Portal 2 (and other Valve games) survive the transition to 64-bit.

Is there any information about how Valve intends to move forward with their first party titles on future 64-bit-only Mac Operating Systems?

why would it need to be updated to 64bit?

there just no need for portal 2to be updated to 64bit.
Mac OS 1.15 no longer supports 32 bit games. I suggest downloading an older version of Mac OS (1.14 or later)

I took a quick look on the Mac App Store. All of the games I've bought over the years, all updated to 64-bit and ready to run. I think that Valve is letting us down here, especially for iconic titles like Portal.

btw: dropping 32-bit is a little like dropping floppy disks, CDs, etc. it's about staying lean and mean and evolving. The next edition of Windows drops support for legacy code too, it's the only way to move forwards.

Except there isn't going to be a "next" edition of Windows. Windows 10 is, for the foreseeable future, Windows as we'll know it. It's Windows as a service with no plans for a "Windows 12" or such. They finally realized that supporting multiple OSes was folly and have stuck to one.
Except there’s not going to be another edition of MacOS. OS X is the last edition of MacOS.
Apple’s been playing this game longer than Microsoft.

is MacOS so bad it can't support backwards compatibility for 32 bit applications?

in a more serious note you should be able to play portal 2 fine, if there is an issue, it won't be related to your OS being 64 bit, 64 bit OS as it would imply, can handle much more than 32 bit applications
Seriously? That's just useless. Please, I have the same problem, and portal 2 is my favorite game. Don't just be a sitting duck. Be helpful for once.:steamsad: You use windows 32-bit, don't you?

I have no idea if this will work, but I would highly suggest trying crossover from codeweavers to see if portal can be used with it. It’s similar to WINE but adds a layer for x32 to x64 now.

Why ppl still use Mac, its like 1k dollar for a Pentium 4

I don't get it
90% Chance my i9 9880H is better than whatever you have knocking around in that windows box of yours.

i9 9880H is nowhere near the same levels of performance as a desktop i9 not even close. I'm willing to bet even the newer i7 and some higher end i5 desktop processors rape the mobile i9's. sorry but my i5 9300h is only 17-23% weaker than your i9 yet i most likely paid hundreds of dollars if not over a thousand less than what you put out.

and before you tell me how mine is 4 cores, 8 threads and yours is 8 cores, 16 threads, let me tell you - majority of applications use up to 4 cores, older ones like this game use up to 2, and only very recent programs use up to 6 effectively. if you want to brag about having a powerful processor, should've gotten desktop instead or opted for a 10th gen Intel CPU or 4th gen Ryzen CPU.

The point was for the "HA MAC" trolling to shut the ♥♥♥♥ up. Nobody asked them about their PotatoOS desktop.

It's annoying especially on a thread where, I repeat, no body asked. If you want to start a debate about it my Cenebench r15 score is within margin of error for a current gen i7 (10th), you know why? Because the current gen i7 is a repackaged last gen core i9. My score being 1232, and the 10th gen i7 score being 1241.

Secondly, I would be willing to guess, that they're using at most a 6th gen core, not a tenth gen, in which case my mobile CPU still will beat their CPU into a pulp of shattered glass.

Second, as far as mac users are concerned, Ryzen cores are irrelevant in terms of MacOS, there's no compatibility with Ryzen on MacOS at the kernel level.

yeah nice try theoretical benchmarks never translate well to real world performance

get wrekt apple fanboy

what next, the amd jaguar in ps4 and xbox one is better than desktop i3 cause of more cores and better optimization from game devs?

Ryzen 9 4900HS > i9 9880H OC
I have equal distain towards Mac users who act the way you are acting. I’m not a fan boy. But apparently it takes more than the functional brain cell you have to see that yes a current gen processor will be faster than a last gen.

I personally DON’T CARE what platform people use but toxic people like yourself think you have a say in other people’s choices. Guess what, you DON’T. It’s not your place to tell ANYONE else especially someone who DID NOT ASK YOU, what platform they should use.

At this point it’s not about Mac vs PC. That era is DEAD.

It’s about a total and utter lack of respect towards other people as individuals.
The OP of the thread asked for people like you who had NOTHING useful to contribute to get lost a long time ago.

Nobody cares how great your “custom built” PC is. Least of all someone who just wants to know if they can run a game on a new operating system.

i5 8600K, i5 9600K, i5 10600K, i7 8700K, i7 9700F, R5 1600AF, R5 3600X, R5 4600X, R7 2700X, R7 3800X > i9 9880H

Since when was my i5 9300H ever part of a desktop? If I cared about impressing others, I'd have wasted all of my savings and built a workstation just to game.

Get wrekt

*Insert nobody cares meme here*
