Using custom image for public-facing thumbnail?
EDIT: forget all the tutorials to get this to work. Just download the Bee2 editor, and it's super quick and easy. Plus the editor is way better than the stock editor (same basic editor, just more tools, assets, and options).

Hey all. I've recently jumped into the marvelous world of Portal 2 chamber design, and I can't figure out how to substitute the main workshop thumbnail with one of my custom images. I can get my custom thumbnail to represent the inner-page of the item, but I can't get it to represent the public thumbnail.

I watched an explainer video and searched the web...I replaced the games thumbnails with my own custom thumbs which I named the same thing as the game's thumbnail...and set the file to 'read-only'...and then published the map again, but it still over-writes my file regardless.

Thank you so much in advance!

Long time ago I made a guide about it

Some people in the comments complained that this way didn't work for them. I don't know why. I've just checked it and it worked fine for me.

You said you had set the "untitled.jpg" to "read only" but it was overridden. I think that the problem is somewhere here. I used only raw game screenshots without editing them in any applications.

None of the methods worked.

By the way, when I successfully set the custom thumbnail to 'read only' and 'deny write'...and tried to publish the map, there was an error compiling the map. Not being able to over-write the custom thumb thwarted the build. Bah. Lame. Not being able to do a custom thumb almost makes me not want to make P2 maps...if my map thumb blends in with the billion other similar looking thumbs...whats the point.

Download beemod. It allows you to have custom thumbnails along with many other things.

Yeah, so does Portal 2 Authoring Tools (Hammer and p2map_publish.exe). But the method above doesn't require any additional tools.

You can try out another way. Set 'read only' to the long number string folder after you replaced the file in it.

I use Bee2 mod. And I've tried every different kind of file name change swap read only method. Nothing works as I said.

How in Bee2 can I use a custom thumb? I don't see that option?

Thanks all!

In the compile options window, switch from Map Settings to Compile Settings. click custom and select your picture. Then export to Portal and rebuild your map.

Ya, I had found it. I was a bit of a dunce there, sorry. All good. I'm so much happier now. Bee2 works perfectly.

@Armothy Could you please test one more way. Set that file not 'read only' but 'hidden'. It works for me too. May be this attribute won't be overridden by your system.
