I forgot, is that the same room where the vaporizer thingy was broken, and you could try to take the cube with you, but once ("carolin"?) found out, she said "it was about to say 'I love you'" ? (after she vaporized it herself)

its the room where she keeps fizzleing it. then says "we have a warehouse full of these things."

Yes, it makes a humming noise. They do have a warehouse full of them. They're companion cubes.
When you get close enough it plays a variation of "Cara Mia", the song the turrets sing for you at the end of the game.

If you hear "Cara Mia" early in the game, it's not coming from the cube. If memory serves, in the aforementioned room are multiple sentries to be destroyed by diverting lasers and a lone sentry in a cubby hole near the room entrance. After destroying the lone sentry that access can be explored, revealing not only a Ratman hideout but sentries practicing "Cara Mia" for the finale.

Actually, they were singing a song called "Turret Wife Serenade."

It's been a while since I played the game with a fine tooth comb. I said above, "if memory serves." Apparently it didn't :-)

As Mooshroom said, that's the "Turret Wife Serenade" easter egg.

https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=I6NJCt9yLfY THIS is the "Cara Mia" song the Companion Cube sings when you get close to it.
