No sound in Portal 2
Okay I have gone through at least 20 threads just on this topic. There is so many answers and I have tried about all of them. When I launch Portal 2 I never get any sounds. Not when launching or in-game. Anybody know a fix for this that has worked for them? Keep in mind I want a fix not a explanation why this is happening whether it's about the source sound engine or something.

Btw I am running steam as an administrator and portal 2 as an administrator so please don't recommend that as that didn't work as well. I have also tried uninstalling portal 2 and installing it 3 times now. But it never seems to work.

Do other games you've installed from Steam have sound?

is your sound settings for portal 2 all the way up,if they are up try verifing the game cache, maybe that will work

how do you verify game cache

Right click the game in your steam library, click properties then local files then verify integrity of cache.

validating game cache would have the same results as reinstalling.

open the game. alt tab or just go to the desktop. click the speaker icon click mixer and make sure its not muted in there or just any kind of logitech or razer program you have in general.

I fixed it. Had the same problem, read a bunch of threads and nothing led me to this solution. Ends up that the microphone setting in the audio control panel was turned on, but I didn't have a mic setup. Turned off the microphone, restarted the game and now I have sound. Hope that helps others.

I turned mine off and it still didn't work... I mean I probably did something wrong since I didn't actually expect it to work (I did it before I saw your answer). I have a mic setup so I might as well just connect it to my Mic

It didn't work sadly

I fixed it (not really fixed but it works now) I recently bought a blue yeti mic and it must've messed with the settings or something bc when I connected my laptop to the mic the sound came back. It even works when the mic isn't connected. I think when I first connect the mic it changed some settings and it for some reason couldn't revert back to original settings but when I connected the mic again it reset it and now it reverts automatically again (I know nothing about computors)
