Are we the villains?
After ransacking my 10,000th village today I had to ask myself, am I actually the bad guy? Sure it's easy to claim the moral high ground on the Earth maps killing Root, but as we shift over to Rhom, Resium, and Yaesha, it seems like I'm just invading native's territory and killing indiscriminately. The Iskal queen seems cool with me Thanos snapping her kingdom with my ricochet rifle, but does that make it right?

I am definitely NOT being held at gunpoint by a giant ratfolk as I type this.

the bottom line is that you, as the main character, want to free the earth from the root, but to do this it is not enough just to clear the earth of weeds, you need to find something that will not allow the root to exist at all and attack different worlds, and even considering that you kill the natives, you save their world as a whole (Especially after dlc passes)

Well Rhom is dead, and those locals are the worst kind, post apoc mutants, most of them the real residents are like that woman you meet right at the start after the portal.
Same thing in Corsus, planet is gone, everyone is a zombie without a mind thanks to the queen, that is explained in the Corsus DLC.
Yeasha is the same thing, the humanoids you kill are all out in the woods by order of their queen, who you will only meet in the second game btw, the good guys are the resistance, you meet their leader once.
Read the notes you find and talk to the few good NPCs and you will see for yourself, the leader of the resistance does a great explanation, as for the bosses i guess all of them are monsters or guardians.
The really bad thing is when you kill a guardian, you open the world for the root, in that sense you are the villain, you can see the consequences in the second game.

The only world guardian the wanderer kills in Remant 1 is Ixillis in Corsus; Earth( the core) never had a guardian because it was supposed to remain separate from the other worlds. Rhoms guardian is still barely alive, and if you give the undying king the guardian essence from Corsus he uses that to revive Rhoms guardian. and Yaeshas Guardian was killed by the protagonist of the previous game and it's reanimated corpse is being puppeted around by a root monster in remnant 2.

The reason why you kill Ixillis is because Eslan, The undying king hand picked that world because it was already too far gone from it's own infestation; the Iskal- the iskal queen herself even asks you to kill Corsus' guardian because she wants to attempt assimilating the root into the Iskal.

Only the player character from Chronos: before the ashes( previous game) actually jeopardises multiple worlds by killing their guardians. The wanderer is just trying to find Ford, and later the Traveler in remnant 2 is mostly hunting powerful beings to contruct the index. Though to be fair, this includes Sha'hala and the One True King, which are world guardians, but both ended up corrupted due to prior events. N'Erud is probably already doomed because that universe has already completey succumbed to heat death and everything in N'Erud itself has been irreparably warped due to it's first attempt to enter Alepsis-Taura. and Losomn MIGHT still be okay due to the Stitching; possible that the Dran oracle or the Crimson Prince might be able to serve as a replacement for the One True King.

Yaeshas guardian, Many faces, was killed by the Dreamer( previously known as the adventurer and also as the destroyer). and Rhoms guardian was critically wounded when Eslan essentially nuked his own planet to stop a root incursion in the past.

I'm still quite at the beginning, so I just appreciate the answers of the others. But I need to tell you how delighted I am that you actually care about these things and thought about it.
There seem to be so many gamers who just run through games not caring about stories or their actual role in the world, and less about anything not paying points, it was really cool to read your text.

this game has no story or plot
apologies but that is true

its always been this question

the game doom, are you good or are the demons?
are nazi's bad? not all germans were nazis
but lets make 9000 games to kill them
not remembering they were misguided people, not evil

well some were evil but,
yeah

i think of it this way

if you go talk to a therapist,
you should be both that therapists therapist, and patient
or another way
a teacher should teach and LEARN
so should a student, learn, and teach

hugs and if you are looking for plot
this game doesnt... have that..

I agree. We the survivors have been attacked and are fighting for our survival.
