Melee Build is Awful
For my first character I wanted to stick with the theme of my archetype choice. Built the spec so far around melee and crit + crit-dmg. Have rings, neck, guns, and mods that are appropriate for this build. Starting shotgun with either 'Mantle of Thorn' or the Corrosive defense debuff AoE. Whatever works for the pistol slot mostly, had used starting pistol and any of the melee focused mods (or Blink).

Problem with this game is, there is no block for melee, so timing means everything. Many enemies it's in your best interest NOT to melee them or they are just not reachable. Closing the gap on ranged enemies usually doesn't work out so well unless you have cover to exploit.

Really feels like melee was an afterthought...

It would be nice to see a block (with its own meter or stamina depletion) and/or a parry. For the parry it could just be the attack button but it must be perfectly timed. As of right now, a melee build is not viable and completely unrewarding. Feels like I've wasted my trait points and the class fantasy is void for the 'Scrapper'.

PS - Where is my greatsword!

um, yeah, melee is the backup.

I mean you can improve it slightly, but if you're looking for melee this ain't the game chief. Sorry to burst your bubble if that was the hope.

Some bosses, especially later in the game, can't be physically reached so a 100% melee run is actually impossible. And you cant attach mods to melee weapons. All in all, the game fully revolves around shooting.

I think the damage payoff for melee should be a bit higher, especially the slow, poor range weapons like the flail and hammer. There should be more reward for learning the animations and playing skillfully with melee, but as it is, it's better to just kite and shoot. The faster melee weapons are more useable, mainly for occasional leech hits.

If you want melee, Dark Souls is right there.

Melee seems to be modeled after more modern combat. In other words, a melee weapon is a last resort item or at the very most, something you use to converse ammo. It's just not that good. It's most definitely not balanced in a way for you to completely ignore your primary weapons, and I understand that.

At the end of the day, I wouldn't say that melee is an afterthought, but just not meant to be primary means of combat for this game. Shooting is.

Melee is great when you pair it with a shot from one of the guns to stagger an enemy. If you're going Melee only in a game where pretty much every enemy has ranged attacks you will definitely have some issues. A block would be cool, but I don't know how much sense it would make if a huge monster was hitting you with a blade about the size of your leg.

I'm litterly immune to bosses damage and i am a PURE melee DPS/TANK.

what synergies? there's only 3 options in beginning of game. the time it takes a person to run up to an enemy i usually already one shot the enemy.

if you're talking end game synergy thats like 10% of game. running to enemy is missed dps.

yea melee is ♥♥♥♥♥♥♥ in this game you cant beat most bosses with melee.(prop all beyond the 1st)
Desado Aug 18, 2019 @ 5:38pm
It seems to be a wasted chance as far as melee is concerned. It is in need of tweaking, either a block or hyper armor system would be nice. At the least take away the Scrapper start, seeing as it misleadingly makes you feel melee builds are viable. As it stands from what I have seen it isn't. At the most the scrapper's Close Range trait is good for shoguns or the shotgun/grenade launcher you get from the ENT boss, scrapper should be advertised as a shotgun build not a melee build.
Sweets Aug 18, 2019 @ 5:46pm
there is a ring that boost your melee speed and a mod that can cover you in thorns that help a lot for melee builds but yes melee is not very complex
HypetheKomodo Aug 18, 2019 @ 5:57pm
I dunno, if you go a certain armor set (you get it in the desert, it gives you 50% enhanced melee dmg and crit on a perfect dodge), the Butcher's necklace, Razorstone, and Root Circlet with a high level Scythe, you can dodge, and then chain heavy attacks for 700-1000 a combo, with a hard hitting bleed applied.

If you get a certain mod that makes you resistant to staggering, you can shred bosses if you activate the perfect dodge proc. That said...yeah, main focus is on guns. You can't even hit some bosses with melee.
KyrenCross Aug 18, 2019 @ 6:10pm
Yeah I was hoping there would be at least a block or parry with melee.
Would make melee build more fun and viable.
But I guess they would program monsters parry animation, even Boss ones.

One downside is it will make the encounters much more easier with this so I am also kinda glad that it has none of those things.
The Surge 2 will satisfy my urges with that one.
biggn82 Aug 18, 2019 @ 6:12pm
That's unfortunate I was hoping to do a pure melee build, I was concerned about this.
