Also like others said if your friends had higher level gear than you, enemies would scale up to that so you might end up at a disadvantage.
That definitely happened. I was basically speeding through the game and then joined in with a couple of friends who had been having trouble, so I was geared lower than everyone else.
I've heard about the 3-person jump as well, though.
