Anyone have some tips for playing an ex-cultist?
I started the game out by playing a hunter but I got stuck at the church defending quest, now I rerolled as an ex-cultist but I'm still quite unsure on where to spend my trait points and which weapons to use early in the game and what to upgrade and what not to upgrade.

Does anyone have some basic tips on how to proceed?

I like to start with cultist but I usually switch to hunting rifle as soon as possible. This weapon is great for shooting weak spots even at very long distance. After upgrading health, stamina and spirit, you can upgrade Exploiter trait (unlocked after doing a certain number of weak spot hits). This trait increases the % of extra damage on weak spots.

For mods, I like the healing aura and the hot shot, until I can craft better ones. If you fought Shroud, you can craft the Rattle Weed mod that attracts enemy aggro. This is good for the church.

upgrading the stamina and health ones first are always a good idea. Cant remember the names atm :p Upgrade everything evenly, dont just upgrade the one weapon and nothing else as that will raise the difficulty before you're ready

the archetypes only define your initial loadout and give you the "class specific" trait right away. you can aquire the "class traits" later on anyways.
also every weapon is "equal". there are no starter weapons that will become obsolete. you will be able to upgrade everything to max level.
ofc different weapons are better in different situations and it is also about your preferance.
starting with excultist is good due to the spirit trait imo.
putting points in health and stamina as well as spirit is never wrong.

Don't focus on health in the beginning because you get very little per trait point. Instead, focus on stamina - you'll need that more - and the trait that increases experience points earned.

This +1.
max out the experience trait first. For reals.
Then as ex-cultist I focused on mod power.

Personally I don`t see the point of the experience trait. This game literally never ends and you keep your experience even after dying. You will have to play a bit less to max out a character, but in the beginning it will gimp you.

I could be wrong, but according to my calculation, it only starts to pay off around trait rank 86. You start at rank 10 then invest 20 points and when you would normally earn 56 more points, you get +35% = 76. So you've just paid off your 20 point investment.
