Equipped gear and inventory.
Max is 6 for everything unless the melee weapons, are all in 0.
Oh.
Yes, I have some boss weapons upgraded up to 6 (Devastator, Ruin, Crossbow).
I didn't know that they count double for gear score.
That also means that if I upgrade bought weapons up to 12 my gear score won't go up?
Did the devs explained that somewhere?

Well there is wiki of game, Its mentioned boss weapons have max upgrade level of 10 and each upgrade is counting as +2 upgrades of ordinary weapons.

Boss weapons go to +10 and count double and normals go to +20.
So if your current gear score is 10 with everything counted in and your highest weapon is a +6 boss weapon then this means if you will upgrade all your armor and guns to +6/+12 then your gear score will go up to +12 (obviously). Even after knowing it happens to people that they accidentally go higher then they wanted, it can be confusing.
Yes, the system of difficulty and gear score is a little confusing.
I upgraded my coach gun (not a boss weapon) up to 12 and my gear score is still 10.
So yes, my weapons are counting as 12.
So I think that I can upgrade all primary weapons up to 12 now, and still be 10.
Don't know what happens with secondary weapons, I mean, Defiler, Hive Cannon, they are at 6 now.

So the hive cannon, defiler are boss weapons. There is no boss armor.
Where is your calculation coming from? I am not sure if its calculated like that.
(12+0+12+6+6+6)/6=7 so it does not seem to work like that. Assuming you had handgun and main gun boss +6. If goes by inventory not equipped. So you sure you not ever upgraded any melee weapon?
I think its rounded up in case.
I was thinking that the armor sets that starts with +6 (void, slayer) were counting like +12.
Numbers were going exactly.
12+12+0+12+12+12=60
60/6= 10
So was perfect.
But I upgraded a non boss boots to 12 (cultist), and gear score went up to 11.
So armor sets are not counting as 12.
So i'm still confusing on how the calculations are done.
"Tragic" (aka Ben Cureton - Principal Designer) says at the reddit post this:
"So, if you have a +5 gun (so level 6 behind the scenes), a +3 secondary gun, a +2 sword, and +1 armor (all 3 slots) your weighted afterage is about level 5"
5+3+2+1+1+1=13
13/6= 2.2 not 5
but considering that the level for calculations could be +1 per each (because 0 is the "first" level behind the scenes)
6+4+3+2+2+2=19
19/6=3.16 not 5
I can't undestand why he says is 5, what maths he does.

This is taking all the joy out of the game for me and i wish i had known of this before i bought it. Having to min/max ur gear score in order to not screw urself over without knowing how their math works is extremely frustrating.
You probably don't know about boss weapons counting as +2 in each upgrade. So boss weapon at 10 is counting as 20 for ordinary weapons. Hear score summary is pretty accurate.
i do know that, its stated in this very thread. Still the average doesnt equal the "gear score"
It's usually really accurate. Dunno what cause this in your situation.
